Footballer nabbed for posing as EFCC official

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested one Oluwasegun Sanni, aka Nicholas, for allegedly parading himself as an official of the commission.

Sanni, a street footballer, was picked up on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 in Ikoyi, Lagos.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said Sanni was arrested while he was collecting a bribe of N450,000 he “fraudulently demanded from one Alhaji A. Abubakar” whom he had earlier called to the office of the EFCC to respond to a fictitious petition allegedly written against him.

Uwujaren said, “The suspect approached Abubakar about a month ago that he wanted to assist him to kill a petition written against him by some unnamed petitioners.

“Abubakar reported the approach to the EFCC and he was advised to play along. The efforts paid off when Sanni showed up on Wednesday to receive the bribe. He was promptly arrested.”

Sanni was said to have blamed his woes on one Mark Kennedy, whom he said requested him to collect the bribe from Abubakar.

He said, “I met Mark Kennedy in a football viewing centre in Ketu, Lagos. He was the one who sent me to the EFCC’s office to meet Alhaji Abubakar. I don’t know Kennedy’s address and what he does for a living.”
