Top politicians in Enugu State on Friday said that Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, a former governor of the state is alive.
They denied his rumoured death in reaction to reports in the local media and the internet that Nnamani may have passed on.
Those who spoke to our correspondent described the rumour of his death as “wicked and the handiwork of evil people.”

They said that Nnamani was recuperating in Washington DC, United States of America, after undergoing a “medical procedure.”
The 2011 governorship candidate of the People for Democratic Change in Enugu State, Dr. Dan Shere, said, “This is wicked and I know it is the handiwork of evil people who have chosen to play dirty politics.”
Shere, also the Pro-chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, added, “I spoke with him (Nnamani) about one hour ago (3.15 pm on Friday) and he was sounding very well. He has only undergone a successful medical procedure and is recuperating very fast.
“I don’t know why people should be spreading such malicious rumours. What they want to achieve with it, I don’t know.”
A former commissioner for information during Nnamani’s administration as governor, Mr. Ogazimora Igbonekwu, also expressed shock at the rumour.
He said, “This is wicked. Why are people doing this? Has politics in Enugu State degenerated to this level?”
In an official statement by Igbonekwu made available to journalists, he said, “Here is stating that there is no truth whatsoever in the claim by some people that the former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, is dead or gripped with terminal illness.
“Yes, Nnamani undertook a successful surgery two months ago and has been recuperating. He personally spoke twice to me yesterday (Thursday) and at exactly 4.35 pm today, Aug. 17. Friends and well-wishers are advised to ignore the rumour as Nnamani is alive and well.”
Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, the Ebeano Political Platform, an organisation headed by Nnamani and instrumental to installing Governor Sullivan Chime, in 2007, has yet to react to the issue.
