The victim of the armed robbery raid at a bank in Apapa, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, on Tuesday, Inspector Taiwo Ajetunmobi, 51, left behind three wives, eight children and a 90-year old mother.
When us correspondents visited his residence at Ebute Meta, Lagos, yesterday, the three wives, Princess Elizabeth Aina, a.k.a. Mama Yinka, Iyabo and Modinat, some of his children, friends and relations were seen wailing and mourning the family’s bread winner.
Ajetunmobi, a native of Erinmope-Ekiti in Ekiti state, was until his death a member of the Anti-Robbery squad at Apapa police division.
He was killed by two armed robbers who were operating on a motorcycle at a bank in Apapa on Tuesday.
The late Inspector and his colleague were also on a bike. While Ajetunmobi died from gun shot wounds, his colleague called Inspector Wale was seriously injured.
Wale was moved to a nearby private hospital. we learnt he had been moved again to an undisclosed hospital for security reasons.
It was learnt that the late Ajetunmobi was alerted about the bank robbery and they went straight to the scene of the robbery on Warehouse Road and engaged the two robbers in a gun duel.
Ajetunmobi’s first wife, Princess Elizabeth, said the late Inspector had no premonition of his death on the faithful day. Before he left home for work on Tuesday morning, like it was his regular practice, Ajetunmobi prayed with his family members.
The deceased’s first child, Yinka Ajetunmobi, 26, a student of LASPOTECH could not talk to us He was too devastated and saddened to utter a word.
At his office, Area ‘B’ Command, Apapa, scores of policemen were seen Wednesday discussing the incident.
One of the DPOs the late Inspector worked with is now the Area Commander, Area ‘B’, Apapa, ACP Ali Mohammed. Ajetunmobi also worked with the DPO Festac Police Division, CSP Muazu Mohammed.
Until his death, CSP Dan Babo was his DPO. All his former bosses and his present DPO eulogised the fallen cop as a gallant officer, hardworking and a nice policeman.
Some of his colleagues who spoke with us under the anonymity also described him as a generous person, a nice officer and gentleman.
According to his colleagues, Ajetunmobi and Wale were able to save the victim of the bank robbery by confronting the robbers. This, they said showed the commitment of the two inspectors to their jobs.
