Police parade three registrars over Rivers court attack

Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have paraded three registrars of Okehi and Ahoada High Courts in connection with the attack on the two courts.

The suspects, according to the command, were arrested for allegedly conspiring to carry the dastardly acts against the two courts.

Both the Okehi High Court in Etche Local Government Area and the Ahoada High Court in Ahoada East were attacked on January 6, 2014.

While the Ahaoda High Court was hit with an improvised explosive devide, the court in Okehi was set ablaze.

Speaking shortly after parading the suspects, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said the suspects allegedly conspired to attack the two courts.

Mohammad identified the suspects as Poki Douglas and Joseph Nmerekuni, who were purportedly responsible for the fire incident at Okehi High Court.

The other suspect, Abiye Ogori, was said to be responsible for the explosion at the Ahoada High Court.

“They (suspects) were arrested in connection with the attack on two High Courts in Okehi and Ahoada. All of them are registrars of the High courts. We have established cases of conspiracy against the three,” the police spokesperson said.

Mohammad stated that the three suspects would soon be charged to court for the offence.

However, the suspects denied any involvement in the attack on the two High Courts and maintained that the police lied against them.

But the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department in the State Police Command, Mr. Sam Okaula, added that no criminal would easily confess to committing a crime.

Okaula promised that the suspects would be given the chance to defend themselves during prosecution.

According to the deputy commissioner of police, “They will be prosecuted. So they should tell the court their stories. No criminal confesses to a crime.”
