Giant hippopotamus killed in River Benue

A giant hippopotamus was Thursday night killed by fishermen at River Benue in Makurdi.

Hundreds of Makurdi residence gathered to take a close glimpse of the animal as it was dragged out by fishermen and loaded into a canoe.


A fisherman, who identified himself as Kar, told newsmen that there are many hippopotamus in the river apart from the one that was killed. He explained that they were happy to have killed one of the water animals that has been troubling them during fishing.

However, a resident named Sonia Ajoko Esq, said she was not happy that the fishermen killed one of the many hippos in the river.

She said, “Apart from the fact that we often take the glimpse of these hippos that usually come out of the waters, it is also not legal to kill such endangered animals.”

She called on relevant authorities to look into the circumstance that led to the killing of the hippo in the River Benue in other to preserve the endangered species.
