Actress Liz Anjorin explains why she dumped christianity for Islam

Popular actress Liz Anjorin surprised many recently when photos of her on Muslim Pilgrimage to Mecca surfaced online. She later announced that she was changing her religion from Christianity to Islam. She also dropped the name Elizabeth and announced that she would like to be addressed as Aisha, in light with her new religion. Liz has finally opened up about why she made the decision..

Liz tells City People
"It happened in a miraculous way which I have been expecting for long, not that I woke up yesterday and decided to change my religion. By birth, I was half Muslim and half Christian. My father was Christian while my mum was Muslim. Growing up I went to church because of my father. I didn't have a choice at the time but I have always had interest in Islam so immediately my father died I switched over to my mum's religion. It is a religion I love so much. Also Aisha is now my official name though Liz is still my name and I will continue to use the name to do movies.

Photo: Woman caught with dead day old baby in sack in Lagos

A 40-year old widow named Mujidat was caught yesterday Wednesday October 30th with a dead day old baby she hid inside a sack around her residence at at the Iba area of Lagos, PM News reports.
It was gathered that a member of the community, High Chief Babatunde Balogun caught the mother of seven when she was  trying to dispose the baby at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday. When questioned on the content of the sack, she claimed she was coming from the market where she bought some household items.
However, on a closer look, Balogun discovered that the sack contained a dead day old baby the woman allegedly had just delivered. He then called the attention of the other residents. Neighbours told P.M News that after Mujidat’s husband known as Baba Mushin died about three years ago, they have seen men visiting her residence, the house built by her late husband.
When asked if she planned to throw away the baby because of an alleged paternity mess, she denied, claiming  that a welder turned block maker near her residence was responsible for the pregnancy that resulted in the birth of the dead baby she was caught with.

She claimed she took delivery of the baby by herself because she found it easy and therefore did not go to any hospital or sought anybody’s  help.

At about 9 p.m yesterday when P.M.NEWS visited the area, residents of the area were still milling around the residence of the woman.

Officials of the Community Development Association, CDA, in the area later accompanied the woman and her sack of baby to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division where the matter was reported. At the time of this report, the woman was still being interrogated.

World Bank ranks Nigeria 122nd best place for business

The World Bank has ranked Nigeria 147th among the best places for doing business. It also ranked the country as the 122nd for best countries to start a business.

The report released, yesterday, said Nigeria’s low ranking is mainly caused by electricity problems, where the country is ranked 185th out of 189 countries evaluated. The first African country on the list is Rwanda, ranked 32nd.

The report said in Africa, 66 per cent of countries enacted at least one reform last year, against 33 per cent in 2005, adding that nine African countries make up the top 20 most improved in terms of business regulations since 2009: Benin, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

The report said economies are ranked on their ease of doing business, from 1 – 189. A high ranking on the ease of doing business index means the regulatory environment is more conducive to the starting and operation of a local firm.

This index averages the country’s percentile rankings on 10 topics, made up of a variety of indicators, giving equal weight to each topic. The rankings for all economies are bench-marked to June 2013

Boy, 14, rapes nine-year-old girl to death

The police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into how a nine-year-old girl died, after sustaining injuries caused by alleged consistent rape.

According to police authorities, the deceased was raped over five times, by a 14-year-old student, Onyi Adimabua, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

The father of the deceased, Simeon Jigo, told reporters that Onyi is the son of the proprietor of the school his daughter attended.

He said his daughter opened up about the rape when she started having medical problems.

The 77-year-old man said his daughter died on October 3, 2013.

He said, “Up until my daughter’s death, she was a pupil of Fulfilled Greenland School, Ikorodu, and she was in primary three. One day, she came home and started complaining of pains around her vagina, stomach area. We rushed her to Ikorodu General Hospital.

“A doctor checked her and after conducting some tests on her, told us that my daughter had sustained medical complications due to forced sexual intercourse. I was alarmed by this; so, I had a private discussion with my daughter.

“She told me that it was her school proprietor’s son, Onyi, that had been raping her. The boy had threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone about it.”

The indigene of Ondo State revealed that after initial treatments, he took his daughter to Arogbo in Ondo State to be taken care of but her condition continued to deteriorate.

A few days after the troubled father travelled to Ondo State, Onyi, accompanied by his parents, also travelled to Ondo State, to apologise to Jigo’s family. The girl, however, was said to have died that very day.

“On getting to the house where my daughter was, we discovered that she was dead. Onyi confessed that he had been raping my daughter prior to her death,’ Jigo said.

NE learnt that after the girl’s demise, irate youths in the area attempted to lynch the 14-year-old boy.

The bereaved father was said to have intervened and reported the matter to a nearby police station, where the teenager was held for safe keeping. The next morning, Onyi and his parents travelled back to Lagos.

The alleged rapist’s parents, in company with a chief in Ikorodu, reportedly visited Jigo when he returned to Lagos. The group were said to have pleaded that the bereaved father should not pursue the case but he refused.

Jigo said, “I went to the Ikorodu Police station to report the case but was surprised when the policemen on duty said I should not write any statement. They only told me to write down my telephone number and said they would call me later.

“After waiting for many days without any call, I wrote a petition and the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.”

It was however learnt that Onyi had been taken to his father’s hometown in Delta State thereby stalling police investigation.

The teenager’s parents, however described the incident as the handiwork of the devil.

The 14-year-old boy’s father, Andrew Adimabua, said, “I trained that boy in the way of the Lord and expected so much from him. He has confessed to the act; there is nothing to hide. He told me that he learnt about sex by watching blue (pornographic) films.

“We are not hiding him and we will cooperate with the police. On the day the little girl died, he was beaten up and made to stay in the rain for hours. As a result, he contracted pneumonia so we sent him home for treatment. When he recovers, he’ll be taken to the police for questioning.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, expressed shock at the development.

Braide said Onyi would be re-arrested in the course of investigation.

“It is appalling that a teenager could indulge in such act. The matter is under investigation and the culprit will be re-arrested.”

Yet again, Another plane crash averted in Abuja

Another air disaster was averted at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport, Abuja on Monday as a Med-View Airlines aircraft from Lagos suddenly took to the air again at the point of landing in Abuja.

The pilot told the passengers that he took to the air again to avoid a collision with another aircraft on the tarmac.

The airline Flight VL2104 took off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos at noon and was scheduled to land in Abuja at about 1.05pm.

The pilot had already announced final descent into Abuja and asked all passengers and cabin crew to fasten their seat belts but the pilot suddenly took off to the air again with barely 30 seconds to touch ground.

The plane had 150 passengers on board.

After about three minutes of gaining altitude, the pilot announced that he decided to take off again to avoid colliding with an aircraft that was on ground.

He said that after he had been granted clearance to land, it was later discovered that the other aircraft was not fast enough, hence his decision to take off.

The aircraft hovered for another 20 minutes in the air before finally landing at about 1.30pm.

While the drama lasted, the passengers were panic-stricken, especially when the plane entered into turbulent weather on air.

Our source said that among the passengers were five different complete families.

One of the passengers, a nursing mother, who was breastfeeding her son at the time the pilot took off again reportedly withdrew the breast from the boy's mouth and started praying profusely while the baby's cry rented the air.

When the plane finally landed, the passengers struggled to disembark.

"Are you still sitting down? Let me rush down in case it will suddenly take off again," a middle-aged man was heard teasing one of his co-passengers.

The incident came less than a month after an Embraer aircraft operated by Associated Airlines with registration number SCD 361, conveying the corpse of a former Governor of Ondo State, Chief Olusegun Agagu, from Lagos to Akure for burial, crashed on October 3 shortly after take-off at Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.

Thirteen passengers in the crashed plane were killed, including a commissioner in Ondo State, Deji Falae.

ARMED ROBBERY: Police nab Kasali, Godogodo’s second in command

Barely two months after a robbery kingpin in the South-West, Abiodun Egunjobi, popularly known as Godogodo, was arrested, his deputy, Adegoke Kasali has been arrested.

He confessed to killing no fewer than 27 security operatives, including former Ogun State Chief Vehicles Inspection Officer, Yomi Bamgbose.

Kasali, 32, said to have been terrorising the entire South-West, Kwara and Kogi states, was arrested Friday last week by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, led by Muhammed Tijani at Obele area of Ogun State, near Cotonou, Benin Republic.

The robbery kingpin was paraded by the police, yesterday, at the headquarters of SARS, Magbon Abeokuta, with other members of the robbery gang identified as Kareem Mumuni, a.k.a. Baba Owo and Lawal Waliu, alias Ijoba.

Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Okoye Ikemefuna, told newsmen that the gang had killed no fewer than 21 policemen since 2011 in the South-West states, Kwara and Kogi.

Recovered

He said that a cache of arms and ammunition recovered from the gang include two AK-47 rifles with 100 rounds of live ammunition, a Wealthier P22 pistol with 49 rounds of live ammunition, 55 live cartridges, two cut-to-size double-barrelled guns, assorted charms and two packets of Lexomil tablets.

Okoye also said that the gang's female member, Kemi Adesanya, popularly called Special, was currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the shoot-out with the police team.
According to Okoye, the gang members had confessed to killing Mr. Bamgbose in 2011 and five policemen attached to the Quick Response Squad at Ijemo Agbadu and Mowe-Ibafo, a year ago.

He said: "The gang has killed 11 policemen in Kwara and Lagos states. The gang was also responsible for the death of five policemen when they snatched a bullion van in Imeko in September 2011 as well as the killing of four members of the Ogun State Vigilance Service and three filling station attendants at Ifo, last June.

"The suspects were also said to have snatched a Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle from a popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, last August along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Okoye said: "Kasali was injured in a shoot-out with the police. He led the SARS team to the hide-out of the other members of his gang in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State.

"On reaching there, his gang members engaged the team in a shootout. Three of the robbers were killed, while three others were arrested. The others escaped.

"Some items were recovered from them. Efforts are on to arrest other fleeing gang members. The lady amongst them is the most deadly. She was the one shooting at the SARS men."

Kasali's confession

Kasali told newsmen that he had personally killed no fewer than seven policemen. The notorious robber, who is physically-challenged due to burns he claimed to have sustained in childhood, said he regretted his involvement in crime.

He said: "This is the work of the devil. I cannot fathom why I'm in armed robbery. It's beyond my comprehension. I've lost count of the policemen I've killed, but they can't be less than seven.
"I was also part of the gang that killed the four vigilance service men and three petrol station attendants in Ifo. That day we operated with Godogodo.

"Godogodo was our boss and he hated policemen. We also killed two people at the Baptist Church in Sango-Ota.
"I want to advise those still engaged in armed robbery to give up. I've been in this job in the past seven years."

Earlier, the police commissioner also paraded five members of a highway robbery syndicate specialised in waylaying trucks loaded with goods on the expressway.

The arrested suspects include Sola Bamigbade, Abidemi Tajudeen, Kehinde Oguntade, Aliu Hamzat and Joseph Ebenezer.

Father, girlfriend kidnap 9-yr-old son

A 48-year-old man, yesterday, at the Lagos State command of the Department of State Services, DSS, gave a starling revelation of how he masterminded the kidnap of his nine-year-old son in Badagry area of Lagos.

The suspect, Adeyinka Adebayo, who admitted to have connived with his 28-year-old girlfriend, Kehinde Alonge, said he committed the act to generate money from his church members.

He added that the supposed ransom was to meet up with his girlfriend's demand.

Parading the suspect alongside his girlfriend before journalists, the Director, Lagos State Command, DSS, Mr. Victor Achu, explained that Adebayo had on October 3 reported at the command that his son had been kidnapped.

Achu said: "The command swung into action. Preliminary investigations confirmed the kidnap of the boy by one Kehinde Alonge, who demanded a ransom of N350,000 for his release and directed that the money be paid into a UBA account.

"The account was later discovered to be owned by one Taiwo Faloye. After series of tactical planning, the owner of the account and Kehinde were arrested at Ilesha, Osun State, while trying to withdraw the money."

Drama

A mild drama, however, unfolded following an argument between Adebayo and his girlfriend over who brought up the kidnap plan.

While Adebayo claimed that Kehinde hatched the plan to get the N200,000 she needed to open a hairdressing saloon, the later interrupted, stating that "he is lying. I was in Ilesha when he called me to come to Lagos that some people owed him money.

"He said the only way to collect the money from them was for me to come and take his son away, while he pretends that he had been kidnapped.

"I came to Lagos on October 4. I intended going to the school to pick the boy, but Adebayo advised I picked him from the house.

"Since the children knew me, I told the boy to follow me to get something outside and entered the next available vehicle to Ilesha, Osun State. His father even gave me N3,000 for transport.

"When we got to Ilesha, he sent another N3,750 worth of recharge cards for his feeding. He even called his son on phone daily. He was the one that asked me to demand N350,000.

"However, at the end of the bargain, he said I should accept N200,000. Since I had no bank account, I asked one of my relatives to give me his account details. But we were arrested at the point of withdrawal."

'She needed money'

However, Adebayo, a father of two, said: "My girlfriend said she needed money to open her own hair dressing saloon. Since I was not financially buoyant, I decided to raise money by masterminding my son's kidnap.

"I am a vulcanizer and business had not been booming. Anyone I approached for money usually declined to assist me.

"To get money from my church members in particular, I had to mastermind my son's kidnap.

"He spent nine days at my girlfriend's house. At the end of the day, I was able to raise N450,000 from my church members and friends, who earlier refused to help me.

"I regret my action because my son may never forgive me if he is told. I feel ashamed also because his mother has been down with stroke, though we are no longer married.

Finally, Jonathan moves against Stella Oduah, prevents her from signing BASA deal

President Goodluck Jonathan may have finally succumbed to public pressure to  move against the embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, who is currently being probed over the N255m  bulletproof cars bought for her by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

The development came to the fore with the last-minute decision to stop Oduah from signing the much-publicised Bilateral Air Services Agreement with Israel.

The ceremony was given by Presidency officials as the  main purpose of her inclusion in the President's entourage to Israel for this year's Christian pilgrimage.

In her stead, Minister of State I, Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, signed the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government while the Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister, Mr. Zeer Elkin, signed on behalf of the Israeli government.

Presidential spokesman,  Dr. Reuben Abati, after releasing a photograph on Monday on the signing ceremony, issued a statement in which he confirmed  that Onwuliri signed on behalf of the government.

Abati did not however explain  why Oduah was not allowed to sign the agreement despite the fact that the photograph released by her aides  showed that she was present at the event.

The President had come under criticisms for allowing the  minister to be on his entourage at a time he set up a three-member   panel to investigate the purchase of the cars.

A top Presidency source on the entourage of the President in Israel told our correspondent on the telephone that the decision to stop Oduah from signing the agreement   was taken shortly after Jonathan arrived in Israel.

That same reason, he added, informed the decision of the President's aides  to keep the minister away from the President since their arrival in the country.

The Special Adviser on Media to Oduah, Mr. Joe Obi, had on October 22 said in statement that the minister travelled to Israel to sign the pact. Two days after, the Ministry's  Permanent Secretary, Mr. George Ossi, told the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation that Oduah could not appear before it because she "was leading the Nigerian delegation to Israel to sign the BASA."

A former Minister of Aviation, Mr.Femi Fani-Kayode,  who shed light on the development, said Jonathan must have prevented her from signing the BASA because of the situation she  was  in.

He said, "BASA is supposed to be signed by the aviation minister or she could delegate it to the  permanent secretary in the ministry. The agreement has nothing to do with the Foreign Affairs Ministry.  I signed quite a few during my tenure

Suicide bomber tries to bomb Yobe Church, nabbed by Nigerian Army

Special Forces from Division ‘3’ of the Nigerian Army foiled what would have been a devastating attack on a major new generation church situated in Jerusalem Area of Damaturu.

The suspect was said to have been driving towards the church from a bush path when he ran into a military blockade and was arrested.

It was learnt that the soldiers who arrested him recovered one AK 47 assault rifle, and three Improvised Explosive devices from him.

“The man tried to attack some churches at the Jerusalem area of the city where there are many churches.

“He thought he could drive straight from the bush into the church but couldn’t because of the many barricades.

“The soldiers on duty were able to stop him, searched him and arrested him when they found the explosives and the AK 47 in his Honda car.”

It was further gathered that three Boko Haram members were arrested in the evening of Saturday at Jango, a red light area of Damaturu.

It was learnt that the three terror suspects one of whom was injured were said to have been arrested with their AK 47.

A source said that their arrest and shootings in the area led to a stampede as the clients of the prostitutes and people fled in different direction.

When our correspondent contacted the spokesperson of the ‘3’ Division of the Nigerian Army Special Operation Battalion, Lt. Eli Lazarus, he said he was not aware of the developments.

Borno cautions `civilian JTF’ against abuse of power

The Deputy Governor of Borno, Alhaji Zannah Mustapha, on Monday cautioned members of the local vigilante group popularly called “Civilian JTF’’ against taking laws into their hands.

Mustapha made this known when he addressed newsmen in Maiduguri on reports of alleged actions of some members of the group.

“The main duty of the civilian JTF is to assist law enforcement agencies in their job of providing security to the society that is why they sometimes join the military at the check points.

“This does not give them a licence to take laws into their hands by harassing or arresting innocent members of the society,’’ he said.

Mustapha said that it was only law enforcement agencies that had the power to arrest or detain suspected criminals or Boko Haram militants.

“People should note that it is only law enforcement agencies like soldiers or policemen who have the power to arrest or detain suspected criminals like Boko Haram sect members or robbers.

“The idea of the civilian JTF trying to take laws into their hands by acting alone is wrong. This must stop now,’’ he said.

The deputy governor said that the state government was concerned about the modus operandi of some members of the vigilante group.

“Government decided to introduce a reorientation course for members of the group to change their perception and instill discipline in them.

“The first batch of trainees comprising 700 civilian JTF had just concluded their course and hopefully by next month another group of 1,000 will begin training,’’ he said.

Mustapha said that the object was to sanitise the operation of the civilian JTF as well as instill patriotism in them.

“We are hoping to train 5,000 members of the group before the end of 2015.’’ (NAN)

Army arrests ex-colonel who led Yobe B’Haram attacks

A retired lieutenant colonel, who was said to have led the Boko Haram attacks on Damaturu, Yobe State, on Thursday was arrested by security forces during the encounter.

The retired army officer is being detained at a military facility.

It could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report if he has been moved to Abuja for interrogation or not.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Ibrahim,  had put the casualty figure on the part of the insurgents at 70 in a statement that was silent on the number of soldiers killed in the attack.

It was however, learnt that nine soldiers including a lieutenant and four policemen lost their lives in the attack.

“The retired lieutenant colonel was properly discharged from the Army and it was a big surprise when he was arrested and identified by those who knew him as a former officer,” an Army source said.

It was further learnt that the attack on security formations in Damaturu was to avenge the seizure of a truck containing military uniforms and arms by security forces.

The truck was seized last week when the driver objected to a search of the vehicle and he tendered a memo purportedly from the Defence Headquarters directing that the truck should not be searched.

The driver and other passengers were detained and the truck was impounded and parked at the Police Area Command, Guija Road, Damaturu, when the army camouflage and weapons were found inside it.

SUNDAY PUNCH further gathered that members of the sect  are holding a medical doctor who was abducted while on duty at the Sani Abacha Hospital during the Thursday attack.

They also carted away drugs that were in the pharmacy of the medical facility and took away two ambulances belonging  to the Damaturu General Hospital.

Security operatives are said to be looking for the doctor who is feared to have been taken to one of the enclaves of the sect in the North-East.

A security source said on Saturday that the Boko Haram members might have taken away the drugs for the purpose of giving medication to injured fighters of the group while the medical doctor might have been seized for the purpose of rendering medication to their injured members.

Meanwhile, the military on Saturday relaxed the 24 hours curfew imposed on Yobe State to nine hours.

When our correspondent contacted the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade, he said, “Whatever you call it, we are capable of dealing with it decisively.

“We will continue to do the required adjustment both in approach and structure to respond appropriately and ensure that our duty to defend the country and the citizenry is discharged effectively.”

Women who are more powerful than Jonathan

Since inception, President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has been accused of impunity, usually caused by decisions and actions of the President, including those of his ministers and close associates.

Most of the glaring cases of abuse of power including reckless spending of taxpayers’ money have been carried out by the women in Jonathan’s cabinet. These women have proven to be more powerful than the number one citizen of Nigeria because despite public outcries that greet some of their decisions, they go scot-free.

Those who fall in this seemingly untouchable category are the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan; the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke; the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh; and the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah.

These powerful women have some things in common. They are all from the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones. Four of them had their higher education in the United States and two of them are daughters of traditional rulers. Needless to say they occupy some of the most strategic and ‘lucrative’ positions in the Federal Government.

PATIENCE JONATHAN

In Nigeria’s history, Patience Jonathan is believed to be the most powerful First Lady in terms of the amount of influence she has over her husband and his cabinet.

Mrs. Jonathan first gave a glimpse into the enormous power she wields in 2011 when she traversed the country, campaigning for her husband in a way that irked many Nigerians.

Several calls by individuals and groups to the President to restrain his wife yielded no result.

Also, in June this year, in apparent violation of the electoral act, Mrs. Jonathan reportedly started campaigning for her husband ahead of the 2015 elections.

Another show of impunity by the President’s wife is the way she cripples any town or city she visits with her long motorcade, including bulletproof limousines and scores of armed policemen.

She grounded Lagos in 2012 when she visited to say “thank you” to some women groups for their support in electing her husband.

Despite the protest by several Nigerians, who felt that their right to move freely in their country was violated by the movement of an unelected individual, the President’s wife was never cautioned, at least not publicly.

Instead, the Presidency rose to her defence, giving her the liberty to do more in other cities. Her visits and grounding of traffic in Port Harcourt and Warri were also greeted with wide condemnations.

To show how powerful she is, Mrs. Jonathan publicly admitted making attempts to dictate to the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, a move that largely precipitated the ongoing political crisis in the state.

In Aso Rock, where she resides with her husband, the fear of Mrs. Jonathan is the beginning of wisdom as she leaves no one in doubt that she is in charge. There is always a retinue of favour seekers waiting to see her daily.

Mrs. Jonathan, a native of Bayelsa State, was born in Port Harcourt on October 25, 1957 and holds National Certificate of Education in Mathematics and Biology from the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, and a Bachelor of Education degree in biology and psychology from the University of Port Harcourt.

NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA

Right from when the negotiation to bring her from the World Bank started, it was obvious that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was bound to wield so much power in Jonathan’s government.

With her position as the coordinating minister for the economy (a new position created for her) and Finance Minister, Okonjo-Iweala, who is currently 83rd on Forbes’ global list of powerful women, calls the shots as far as Nigeria’s economy is concerned.

While doing that, she has called the bluff of many including state governors and the National Assembly without any consequence.

The state governors, who have complained about the shabby way the minister treat them, have called for her removal while the Academic Staff Union of Universities has called her a ‘dictator.’ But no matter the protest, Okonjo-Iweala remains a darling of the President.

The sacking of Mr. Shuaib Yushau as the Head, Media and Information Unit of the National Emergency Management Agency, after he wrote what was considered a critical article against Okonjo-Iweala, further showed that the minister was not to be messed with.

The article entitled ‘Still on Okonjo-Iweala over Controversial Appointments’, published on March 6, called on the minister “to ensure that appointments into important positions should be done in credible and transparent manner that can withstand public scrutiny.”

Similarly, Mr. Lawrence Ani, was reportedly suspended indefinitely from his job as Saturday Editor of Thisday Newspaper for publishing a story that cited data that indicated a drop in Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product under Okonjo-Iweala’s watch.

In 2011, against the opinion of the majority of Nigerians, Okonjo-Iweala and the  Minister of Petroleum Resources,  Diezani Alison-Madueke, insisted on the removal of fuel subsidy, and literally ordered it on the outset of 2012, resulting in the Occupy Nigeria protest.

Okonjo-Iweala, who also served as finance minister and foreign minister under President Olusegun Obansanjo and as a Managing Director at the World Bank, was born on June 13, 1954 to Professor Chukuka Okonjo, who is the Obi (traditional ruler) of Ogwashi-Uku.

She graduated from Harvard University in 1977, and earned her Ph.D. in regional economic development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981.

She is married to Ikemba Iweala from Abia State.

DIEZANI ALISON-MADUEKE

Virtually all sections of the Nigerian society have called for the resignation of the Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, all to no avail.

Most of those who sought her removal had cited several allegations of corrupt practices under her watch as reasons for their demand.

After the revelation of massive fraud in the fuel subsidy administration to the tune of N1.7trn, many had thought that heads would roll, including that of Alison-Madueke, who supervised the rot.

Some heads did roll, but not that of the queen of the Nigeria oil and gas industry.

Till date, the Presidency has not queried or probed Diezani over allegations against her and the indictment of departments under her by several panels, including those headed by Nuhu Ribadu, Farouk Lawan, and Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede as well as the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative.

Diezani has also not explained to Nigeria, whom she was appointed to serve, what role she played in the massive corruption that led to the loss of huge amounts of public fund.

Apart from the demands for the Alison-Madueke’s resignation and prosecution by civil society groups, who led the Occupy Nigeria protest, the House of Representatives also demanded her removal as minister.

Despite this, the President did not suspend her, and gave no explanation for that. This shows how powerful she is.

Alison-Madueke is the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria, and in October 2010 she became the first woman to head a country’s delegation at the annual OPEC conference.

She was also the first female Minister of Transportation, and the first woman to be appointed to the board of Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria.

Alison-Madueke was born on December 6, 1960 in Port Harcourt.

She graduated from Howard University in 1992, with a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and returned to Nigeria to join Shell Petroleum Development Corporation.

About 10 years later, she earned an MBA from Cambridge University and was appointed as the first female executive director of Shell Nigeria.

In 1999, she got married to Admiral Alison Madueke (retd), one-time Chief of Naval Staff who was at different times military governor of Imo and Anambra states.

STELLA ODUAH

Not many are aware of the tremendous power of the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, in Jonathan’s government.

For her role in Jonathan’s 2011 campaign, she was reportedly rewarded with a ministerial appointment to the aviation ministry, even though she had no prior training in the field of aviation.

Many believe that the President feels indebted to her for her role as the Director of Finance and Administration of the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation and in the establishment of Neighbour-to-Neighbour outfit, which reportedly spent billions of naira on adverts and media propaganda in favour of Jonathan, especially while the Occupy Nigeria protest lasted.

Considering this relationship with Jonathan, it should not be a surprise that Oduah’s response to critics after the Dana and Associated Airlines crashes reeked of arrogance.

The latest revelation that she forced the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to buy her bulletproof vehicles has again elicited calls for her removal and prosecution but considering the way the President has treated public outcries against these powerful women, Oduah is likely to remain minister till the end of Jonathan’s administration.

Princess Stella Oduah was born on January 5, 1962 to Igwe D.O. Oduah of Akili-Ozizor in Anambra State on January 5, 1962.

She got her Bachelor’s degree in accounting and MBA from American universities.

Oduah joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in 1983 and in 1992, she established a petroleum products marketing company, Sea Petroleum & Gas Company Limited.

She was married to the former Minister for Works, Chris Ogiemwonyi.

ARUNMA OTEH

Through her battles, the Director-General of the Securities Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh, has sufficiently earned the name ‘Iron lady’ even beyond her official sphere of influence.

When she clashed with the House of Representatives Committee on the Capital Market, it was the chairman of the committee, Mr. Herman Hembe, that got hurt.

The committee had accused Oteh of fraud and misappropriation of funds. She fired back, accusing Hembe of demanding bribe from SEC.

The SEC board suspended Oteh in order to investigate the findings of the lawmakers, who probed the capital market and indicted her. She immediately petitioned the President and Okonjo-Iweala.

After two months, the President returned Oteh to her position, following the auditor’s report that said her offence amounted only to ‘administrative lapses.’ The directors and staff of the commission, who had protested Oteh’s alleged high-handedness, were advised to calm down and obey their boss.

On the other hand, Hembe was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and also stepped down as chairman of the committee.

The crisis led to an intense battle between President Jonathan and the House of Representatives. The House demanded the sacking of Oteh but Jonathan refused.

The passage of the 2013 budget was delayed because of the fight. Eventually, the lawmakers insisted on zero budget for SEC to force the President’s hand, but he did not budge.

Calls for her removal by civil society groups also fell on deaf ears.

Oteh, who is an indigene of Abia State, is also a British citizen.

She graduated with first-class degree in computer sciences from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka and earned her MBA from Harvard

Man in court for false alarm over disappearance of manhood

The police on Monday arraigned a trader, John Fadeyi, for allegedly raising false alarm over the disappearance of his manhood in the public.

The accused, 32, who resides at Oja Street in Orile, is facing a two-count charge of assault and raising false alarm in a Magistrates' Court in Tinubu, Lagos.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 23, at about 1.30 p.m. at Agarawu Street on the Lagos Island.

He said that the accused claimed that the complainant, Princess Ajayi Olabode, had bodily contact with him, adding that he immediately felt something leaving his body.

"Fadeyi alleged that when the lady hit him, he felt a shock and that when he touched his private part; he discovered that it had disappeared.

"He raised an alarm and people immediately gathered to plead with the complainant to return his private part,'' he added.

Ighodalo said that the complainant claimed that she was beaten up because of the false alarm which Fadeyi raised.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. M. Ajayi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N40,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

She later adjourned the case to Nov. 4. (NAN)

Energy drinks dangerous, says Nigerian doctor

A physician at the Nigerian National Hospital, Abuja, on Friday advised people with hypertension and diabetes to avoid energy drinks because of their caffeine content.

Dr Agnes Eguagie, of the Department of Medicine, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

“Energy drinks are an attempt by the manufacturer to boost people’s energy alertness by combining the properties of certain compounds that we know that this can actually help.

“They contain caffeine. Caffeine makes people alert, they contain glucose, which is supposed to give you energy, they contain some B vitamins, then some may contain one or two amino acids.

“But the problem with these drugs is that combining all this things together is not actually really helpful.

“They have very high levels of caffeine in them and caffeine in itself has its own problems. Apart from the fact that it makes you alert it actually gives some people nervousness and tremor.

“For patients who are hypertensive, the high level of caffeine will cause the blood vessels to constrict and the blood pressure to shoot up; you can come down with a stoke.

“For those that have hypertension and diabetics, they don’t know, because there is a lot of glucose in it.

“These are not usually advisable, because as I said the high amount of caffeine in it is actually quite detrimental. So, generally, I would not advise patients to take it.“

The doctor said that energy drinks taken in excess could cause heart burn, insomnia, ulcer and would increase the blood pressure.

She, therefore, advised the public, particularly the youth to reduce their intake of energy drinks and avoid mixing it with alcohol, which she said was usually the situation.

“Apart from the fact that caffeine can cause increase in blood pressure if it becomes a habit, it can also give you heart burn; it can give you ulcer.

“It can also increase your heart beat rate and give you tremulousness and insomnia and you wouldn’t be able to sleep well.

“Fine, you are saying it is giving you energy and making you alert but the next effect is that you are going to be so tired and you can’t sleep.

“Your body cannot rest, so, that means it would affect you functioning later.

“Another thing they do is mixing it with alcohol. Alcohol itself has its own effect on the central nervous system.

“Caffeine itself has its own effect on the central nervous system, so you can see that two of them are going to be acting on the person’s central nervous system.

“Some people say they take it every day; it gives them energy to do their daily activity that is very bad, so I will advise against it.

“Maybe, a young person with no hypertension, no diabetes, can take a can once in a while; fine it might not necessarily do anything to him

N32bn Police Pension Scam: How N14bn vanished without my knowledge, witness tells court

The Head of Internal Audit at the Police Pension Office, Mr. Adeyemo Julius Adebolu, yesterday, narrated before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, how about N14billion meant for pensioners across the federation, vanished overnight.

Adebolu who mounted the witness box yesterday, said he never received any voucher for audit payment of the funds which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said was stolen by seven civil servants.

Those fingered in the fraud were Mrs. Uzoma Cyril Attang, Esai Dangabar, Atiku Abubakar Kigo, Ahmed Inuwa Wada, Mrs. Veronica Ulonma Onyegbula, Sani Habila Zira, and Christian Madubuike.
In total, the anti-graft agency told the court that the accused persons succeeded in pilfering about N32billion meant for retired police officers.

At the resumed hearing on the matter yesterday, Adebolu who was led in evidence by EFCC lawyer Mr Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, told trial Justice Husseini Baba when he was shown First Bank statement of account of the police pension office on withdrawals to the tune of N14 billion that the withdrawals under his watch were a big embarrassment done without his knowledge.

"I didn't  know anything about the cheques before that day," he lamented.
When asked if  there was any voucher backing the payments, the witness said: "Honestly sir, there is no voucher I received for audit payment, that's the truth."

The witness had earlier told the court that there was a federal government circular mandating all payments to be made via E-payments from January 1, 2009 and that the police pension office had flouted that orders up till September 2009.

Meanwhile, the court yesterday admitted the circular as Exhibit P5, even as the prosecution tendered as Exhibits, bundles of certified Cheques from the First bank as Exhibit P4 raised in the names of two accused persons Veronica U Onyegbula / Director, Police Pension Office (DPPO).

Adebolu also told the court that it was when he was invited to EFCC that he was shown the bank statement and cheques with regards to the payment.

He told the court that verification exercise/tours were conducted up to four times in a year in the police pension office and that he made payments on an average of N400million for the Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) for officers involved in the verification exercises.

Besides, the witness, cited an instance where he got an alert of N2million and N5million respectively and when he sought clarification from the Head of Account, Mr John Yakubu Yusuf, he was told that the money is meant for payment of the senate and house committee members on police pension.

He said when he asked why the money was raised in his name, he was told that management had agreed that the money will be paid in cash rather than electronically and the voucher duly approved by the Director, Police Pension Office was then raised before he cashed and handed over the N7million from his account to the Head of the central pay Office.

The witness also told the court that during festivity periods like Sallah, Christmas and Easter, Mr Yusuf, had on about five occasions, called him and gave him money for his section, totalling N3.5million. "The instruction will always be that I should take 60% and share the balance to others, so because we are many, I take 30% and shared according to our rank".

Meantime, counsel to the first accused person,  Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, asked the witness if the EFCC invited him in writing or on phone, Adebolu replied and said he was invited on phone through his director.

FG extends deadline for new number plates to June 2014

The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has extended the deadline for the registration of vehicles number plates and drivers’ licences to June next year.

Chief Executive Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Chidoka Osita, who was represented at the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) headquarters by the Corps Transport Standardization Officer, Oluwasusi Familoni, revealed this in Abuja yesterday.

He said: “For the benefit of everybody here, the Joint Tax Board has graciously approved the extension of the deadline for procurement of driver’s licence and number plates till June next year.”

He explained to the association that the responsibility of fixing the deadline is that of the JTB, which consists of all the boards of Internal Revenue, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the corps.

Osita said that the FRSC, which is only on the board as an observer, does not fix deadlines for procurement of number plates and drivers’ licences.

He added that “ whatever the Joint Tax Board says on driver’s licence, number plates is what we carry out. Even as per the price, it is the Joint Tax Board that fixes the price.”

RTEAN President, Alhaji Musa Isiwele Shehu, announced that since the association is a major stakeholder in road transport matters, it would today write a letter to the JTB and FRSC to be included on the JTB board.

He said: “I think I have a point to raise there. We are supposed to be a member of that board because the FIRS and Road Safety are not the ones to buy the numbers, it is our members who buy them. And it is not free, it is for sale.

“We are supposed to be there as board members and we are now to negotiate the price on behalf of my people. You only dish out directives- ‘come and buy this number plate at the rate of N30,000.’

“I know some drivers who have no N30,000 in their accounts. Please you should take this to the office that this is our request.”

Shehu also asked the Federal Government to re-examine the issue of number plates.

The RTEAN boss urged the Federal Government to withdraw the old number plates now that there are new ones.

He explained that failure to withdraw the old ones would culminate in two number plates for one vehicle.

His words: “We are talking about the plate numbers that since they have the intention of changing, it should be a change because of the old one we have paid for it before. They are now bringing another one and saying pay. If you don’t withdraw the old one, automatically, one vehicle has two numbers.”

The association, according to Shehu, wants the dealer numbers be restricted to the state where the dealer is resident.

He insisted that “you can’t put dealer’s number in a vehicle and drive from Kano to Lagos. That dealer number has no particulars. A criminal can commit a crime with it and remove the dealer’s number and obtain a plate number.”

According to the RTEAN boss, the dealer number is supposed to be meant for testing of a vehicle before payment

Boy carrying toy gun shot dead by police

A 13-year-old boy carrying a replica assault rifle has been shot dead by police in the US state of California, the BBC reports.

Officers in the city of Santa Rosa say they opened fire after the boy refused orders to drop the rifle, which they believed to be real.

The shooting on Tuesday is now being investigated.

It comes a day after a 12-year-old boy in Nevada shot dead a maths teacher at his school and wounded two fellow pupils before taking his own life.

In the latest incident, two sheriff’s deputies saw the teenager “with what appeared to be some type of rifle”, a news release from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s office said.

The deputies called for backup and repeatedly ordered the boy to drop the gun before firing several rounds from their handguns, police said.

The boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was later identified by his family as Andy Lopez.

“He was holding the weapon in his left hand. He began to turn toward his right in the direction of the deputy, and in so doing he moved the gun toward the deputy, and the deputy’s mindset was that he was fearful he would be shot,” Lt Paul Henry of Santa Rosa police said.

But the boy’s father, Rodrigo Lopez said the shooting made no sense. “My son lost his life. He’s not alive any more just because of the mistake of somebody.”

The replica gun had belonged to a friend, he said.

The sheriff’s office said a plastic handgun had also been found in the boy’s waistband.

Witness Brian Zastrow told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat he heard seven shots.

“First, I heard a single siren and within seconds I heard seven shots go off, sounded like a nail gun,” he said.

One man who saw the events unfold said the shooting was over in an instant.

“He pulled over to the kid walking and he just opened the door and shot him, three shots,” Ismael Mondragon told KGO-TV.

Police Lt Dennis O’Leary said the deputies had been placed on administrative leave pending the inquiry.

Sheriff Steve Freitas described the shooting as a “tragedy” and promised the investigation would be thorough and transparent.

“As a father of two boys about this age, I can’t begin to imagine the grief this family is going through,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the boy’s school described him as “a very loved student, a very popular, very handsome young man, very smart and capable”.

Linsey Gannon, assistant principal at Lawrence Cook Middle School, said he played trumpet in the school band.

“Our community has been rocked by his loss,” she said.

Candles, teddy bears and flowers have since been left at the scene of the shooting.

“He was a good kid, he was 13 years old. He didn’t look like a man, Andy, he was a boy,” one friend told local media.

On Monday, a 12-year-old boy who has not been named opened fire at a school in Sparks, Nevada, killing maths teacher and Afghanistan veteran Michael Landsberry.

Police said Mr Landsberry had tried to coax the boy to drop the gun, enabling children in the playground to flee.

The boy then shot and injured two fellow pupils, before taking his own life on the outdoor basketball court.

President Barack Obama has recently renewed calls for changes to US gun laws following a series of deadly shootings. However, the BBC’s Alastair Leithead in Los Angeles says the proposals face fierce resistance.

Associated Air Crash: Yet another survivors dies

Associated Airlines’ aircraft technician who was among the five survivors of the October 3 crash that left 15 people dead in Lagos has passed on. He died at the Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos, where he had been receiving treatment.

The development brought to 16 the number of dead victims of the ill-fated plane which crashed while conveying the remains of former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu, from Lagos to Akure.

Sources at the hospital said the technician, Mr. Samson Fatoye, died at about 7pm on Wednesday. Fatoye, who suffered severe burns from the crash, had been treated in many hospitals before he was finally taken to the Gbagada hospital.

The sources said Fatoye died few hours after immigration officials from Abuja arrived in the hospital with electronic data capturing machine to prepare passport for the survivors to travel overseas for further treatment.

Our correspondent however learnt that the remaining four survivors, including the two cabin crew members, were captured, using the machine.

The remaining survivors, it was learnt, might be flown to overseas any time soon.

However, there were allegations that the survivors had been neglected by both the government and the management of the airline.

There had been reports that one of the surviving flight attendants, Mrs. Quinneth Owolabi, whose 10 toes and five fingers were amputated days ago, had been in severe pains before and after the surgery.

The National Cabin Crew Association had reportedly appealed to the Federal Government to fly her abroad for treatment to avoid the amputation.

Serving and retired cabin crew executives had expressed anger over government’s refusal to come to the aid of the victim despite the appeal made by NACCA and the family.

Spokesperson for the group, Mrs. Blessing Efe, had reportedly said that Owolabi would have been saved the trauma of amputation had government heeded her cries.

Efe said, “It is unfortunate that no help came when Quinneth needed it most. Her toes and fingers were amputated three days ago (four days today). Imagine the trauma she is going through at the moment.

“We want government to always support people who survive air crashes because the accident is not their making.

“We are trying now to sensitise the public and government on the need to assist those who survive air crashes. It is not easy to survive air an accident.”

The second surviving cabin crew member, Miss Toyin Samson, was said to be in a stable condition at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where she has been on admission.
