61 Mobile Policemen Missing In Nasarawa

Police search and rescue team deployed in Alakyo forest in Nasarawa state recovered the corpse of an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Momoh, who led the operation to dislodge the Ombatse militia group, as it was discovered that no member of the 61 Mobile Police Force Squadron 38, known as ‘Tiger Squadron’ in Akwanga survived the raid.
Momoh’s corpse was recovered alongside those of many slain security operatives.
The police and the State Security Service had put the number of their dead or missing officials involved in the last week attack at 56, including 46 police officers and 10 SSS operatives.
“Apart from the 61 MOPOL officers that were deployed from Akwanga, we have yet to see many others mobilised from the MOPOL base in Lafia, including the men of the State CID. So the claim that only 56 policemen died cannot be true,” an officer told Punch.
Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, was reported to have summoned the officer in charge of the base to the Force Headquarters.
The Force Headquarters have also begun an investigation into allegation that the Nasarawa State Government paid a huge amount of money to the state Police Command to influence the massive deployment of its officers for the ill-fated operation against the militia group.

Nigeria President Jonathan declares State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria today declared a state of  emergency in three Nigerian states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno. The  president made the declaration during a nationwide broadcast carried  live on national television.
In imposing the state of emergency today, President Jonathan wielded extra-Ordinary measures by invoking
Section 305, Sub section 1 of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria.
However, Mr. Jonathan stated that regardless of the state of  emergency imposed today, the governors in the three states will remain  in office.
The president had earlier met with the governors in the Aso Rock Villa late afternoon shortly before the the broadcast.
ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR ON THE DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN BORNO, YOBE AND ADAMAWA STATES IN ORDER TO RESTORE PUBLIC ORDER, PUBLIC SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE AFFECTED STATES OF THE FEDERATION

MAY 14, 2013

Dear compatriots,
1.    It has become necessary for me to address you on the recent spate of terrorist activities and protracted security challenges in some parts of the country, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Plateau and most recently Bayelsa, Taraba, Benue and Nasarawa states.  These unfortunate events have led to needless loss of lives and property of many innocent Nigerians including members of our security forces.

2.   The recent killing of security operatives by a cult group in Nasarawa state is particularly condemnable. I have directed that no effort or expense be spared in identifying and bringing to justice all those who had a hand in the killing of the operatives.

3.   The activities of insurgents and terrorists have been reprehensible, causing fear among our citizens and a near-breakdown of law and order in parts of the country, especially the North. We have taken robust steps to unravel and address the root causes of these crises, but it would appear that there is a systematic effort by insurgents and terrorists to destabilize the Nigerian state and test our collective resolve.

4.  Since I returned to the country after cutting short my visit to South Africa and aborting a planned state visit to Namibia, I have received detailed briefings from our security agencies. These briefings indicate that what we are facing is not just militancy or criminality, but a rebellion and insurgency by terrorist groups which pose a very serious threat to national unity and territorial integrity. Already, some northern parts of Borno state have been taken over by groups whose allegiance is to different flags and ideologies.

5.   These terrorists and insurgents seem determined to establish control and authority over parts of our beloved nation and to progressively overwhelm the rest of the country. In many places, they have destroyed the Nigerian flag and other symbols of state authority and in their place, hoisted strange flags suggesting the exercise of alternative sovereignty.

6.  They have attacked government buildings and facilities. They have murdered innocent citizens and state officials. They have set houses ablaze, and taken women and children as hostages. These actions amount to a declaration of war and a deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of the Nigerian state and threaten her territorial integrity. As a responsible government, we will not tolerate this.

 7.  Previously, we adopted a multi-track approach to the resolution of this problem through actions which included persuasion, dialogue and widespread consultation with the political, religious and community leaders in the affected states.

8.  We exercised restraint to allow for all efforts by both State Governors and well-meaning Nigerians to stop the repeated cases of mindless violence.

9.  Yet, the insurgents and terrorists seek to prevent government from fulfilling its constitutional obligations to the people as they pursue their fanatical agenda of mayhem, mass murder, division and separatism.

10. While the efforts at persuasion and dialogue will continue, let me reiterate that we have a sacred duty to ensure the security and well-being of all our people and protect the sovereign integrity of our country. Therefore, we shall, on no account, shy away from doing whatever becomes necessary to provide the fullest possible security for the citizens of this country in any part of the country they choose to reside.

11.   We have a duty to stand firm against those who threaten the sovereign integrity of the Nigerian state. Our will is strong, because our faith lies in the indivisibility of Nigeria.

12.  Following recent developments in the affected states, it has become necessary for Government to take extraordinary measures to restore normalcy. After wide consultations, and in exercise of the powers conferred on me by the provisions of Section 305, sub-section 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I hereby declare a State of Emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

13.  Accordingly, the Chief of Defence Staff has been directed to immediately deploy more troops to these states for more effective internal security operations. The troops and other security agencies involved in these operations have orders to take all necessary action, within the ambit of their rules of engagement, to put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists.

14.  This will include the authority to arrest and detain suspects, the taking of possession and control of any building or structure used for terrorist purposes, the lock-down of any area of terrorist operation, the conduct of searches, and the apprehension of persons in illegal possession of weapons.

15.  The details of this Proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. But in the meantime, let me make it clear that within the purview of this Proclamation, the Governors and other political office holders in the affected states will continue to discharge their constitutional responsibilities.

16.   I urge the political leadership in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states to co-operate maximally with the Armed Forces and the Police to ensure that the exercise succeeds. We call on the citizenry to co-operate with our security agencies to ensure a return to normalcy within the shortest possible time.

17.   I am again approaching our neighbouring countries, through diplomatic channels, as done in the recent past, for their co-operation in apprehending any terrorist elements that may escape across the border.

18.  Nigerians are peace-loving people; these sad events perpetrated by those who do not wish our nation well have not changed the essential character of our people.

19.  I want to reassure you all that those who are directly or indirectly encouraging any form of rebellion against the Nigerian state, and their collaborators; those insurgents and terrorists who take delight in killing our security operatives, whoever they may be, wherever they may go, we will hunt them down, we will fish them out, and we will bring them to justice. No matter what it takes, we will win this war against terror.

20.  I am convinced that with your support and prayers, we shall overcome these challenges and together, we will restore every part of our country to the path of peace, growth and development.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Face Of A Traitor: Meet Corporal Enugu, Alleged Ombatse Informant

How We Fished Out Police Insider Who Supplied Ombatse With Information – Police Commissioner
Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State – Abayomi Akeremale, has disclosed how two policemen allegedly leaked operational details of security personnel on a mission to Alakyo village to arrest the leader of Eggon militia group – Ombatse, were arrested.
Parading the suspects in Government House, Lafia, around 4:30pm on Friday, Akeremale said one of the policemen simply identified as Corporal Enugu, was arrested after a crack team of detectives monitored his behavior since the day of the ill-fated operation.
He said Corporal Enugu who drove one of the patrol vans with registration number NPF 6997 C, was one of the men who returned alive from the operation.

“A team of detectives monitored him carefully. They first stumbled on charms in his vehicle (official vehicle). Then, they followed up and stormed in on him at his residence. But before our men got there, the information had already reached there. But my men were fast to get him, and a second policeman in his house,” the police commissioner said.
Three AK47 rifles and a sack of charms were paraded alongside Corporal Enugu and his accomplice, Corporal Haruna Joseph.
Akeremale also showed Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura the front of a police van driven by Corporal Enugu which had a red sticker with an image of a machine gun and a chain of bullets, by the registration number, saying: “our investigation has shown that this sticker was put so that his members can notice, separate and spare him.
“This is just the beginning. It is like the beginning of a river, which is usually small; it will lead us to track down all members of the sect.”

JAMB Releases 2013 UTME Results: Only Ten Candidates Score 300 Marks And Above

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.
The board, however, withheld 12,110 results for possible disciplinary action.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, announced this at a news conference on the release of the results in Bwari, FCT, on Friday.
The registrar said after thorough processing of answer scripts of the candidates who sat for the examination, the board discovered some forms of malpractice perpetuated during the conduct of the examination.
“However, the results of 68,309 candidates from various centres are undergoing further screening to ascertain the culpability of 12,110 candidates’ results.”
A total of 1,629,102 candidates applied to sit for the Paper Pencil Test (PPT), while 15,008 candidates applied for the Dual Based Test, bringing the number of candidates  to 1,644,110.
“The general performance of candidates in this year’s examination shows remarkable improvement compared with last year.
“Ten candidates scored 300 marks and above, while 127,017 candidates scored between 1-159 marks.
“About 40,692 candidates’ results were invalid due to either multiple shading or no shading at all.  After processing all the results, the board also discovered that about 47,974 candidates were absent.”
The registrar assured the candidates that their results could be accessed on the JAMB Website: www.myjambresult.com using their registration numbers.
He said about 40 centres would be screened to ascertain their culpability and warned the public against Internet fraudsters.
“Information reaching JAMB shows Internet fraudsters are already telling candidates that their results could be upgraded in one form or the other.”
This is pure deceit, the public and candidates are hereby advised to disregard these fraudsters since they do not have access to our data.

“I am carrying six-month-old pregnancy for my dad” – 15-year-old tells court

For impregnating his 15-year-old daughter, a Karu Upper Area Court, Abuja, has remanded one Rufua Alabi, 42, in prison custody.
Alabi was arraigned by the police before Justice Alhaji Umar Kagarko for allegedly impregnating his daughter, who is said to be an SS2 student and the second child in the family of six.
The prosecutor, Pascal Njoku, told the court that Alabi of Kurudu Village, Abuja, committed the offence sometime last year, adding that the incest had resulted to a six-month-old pregnancy.
According to him, the victim’s mother, Bose, reported the matter at the Jikwoyi Police Station, after she found out that her daughter was pregnant.
He added that Bose took her daughter to the hospital where a doctor confirmed that the victim was pregnant.
He said the victim confessed to her mother and the elder brother that her father was responsible for her pregnancy.
“My father on many occasions, had sexual intercourse with me when nobody was at home and warned me never to tell anybody about the affair,’’ the prosecution quoted the girl as saying.
Njoku said the offence was contrary to the Penal Code.
When the First Information Report (FIR) was read, the accused, who had no legal representation pleaded not guilty to the one- count charge of putting his daughter, a minor, in the family way .
The presiding judge ordered that his bail application come in form of a motion and adjourned the case to July 3, for further hearing.
