2 die as bomb explosion, gun fire rock Zaria

An explosion and gunfire shook an area around an Islamic school in Zaria, Kaduna state Sunday, leaving two suspected attackers dead and others wounded, emergency officials said.

Details of the blast in the northern Nigerian city of Zaria were sketchy, with initial reports saying that the blast occurred inside the school but a government spokesman later saying that it went off near it.

"It's close to a boarding school called Albani," National Emergency Management Agency spokesman Yushau Shuaib said.

"Two suspects were killed. The innocent victims that were injured were taken to hospital."

Two of the presumed attackers were killed when they exchanged gunfire with security forces after the explosion, he said.

Another relief official said there had also been an exchange of fire between security forces and gunmen Saturday night.

The Boko Haram sect has not claimed responsibility for this attack that backfired badly.

Nigerian couple in jailed in UK for trying to claim £3.8m in benefits scam using 1,400 identities

Adeola Thomas, 38, and his partner, Abimbola Abiola, 34, managed to pocket £87,000 after using 1,400 stolen identities to complete 2,495 handwritten tax and benefits claims forms.

And just like the other couple that was reported to have lavishly spent the money on a house in Nigeria, the pair spent the money on designer clothing and electrical items including a 50-inch plasma television.

The fraud was discovered when benefits staff at HM Revenue & Customs noticed they had received multiple tax credit claims from the same addresses. Subsequently, an investigation was launched.

Thomas' hand-written application forms were analysed, computer records were checked, and hours of recorded calls to the Tax Credit Helpline were listened to and a surveillance operation was carried out. The HRMC investigators viewed CCTV footage showing activity outside various North London Post Office ATMs.

Thomas was eventually arrested at a cash point outside a Post Office in Hackney on October 7th last year. He was found to be in possession of 17 Post Office account cards in different names, two mobile phones and two fraudulently completed forms addressed to Jobcentre Plus.

When Abiola was arrested later the same day, she had £4,125 in her handbag. The mother-of-one claimed the money was her child benefit payment.

Daily Mail reports that the pair, who carried out the scam between January 3, 2007 and October 7, 2011, tried to claim £827,000 from HMRC, securing £43,000. They also claimed £3 million from the Department of Work and Pensions and received £44,000.

With Abiola's help, Thomas used stolen personal details to complete 2,495 handwritten application forms, which were sent to the appropriate departments for processing.

Thomas, who also happens to be an illegal immigrant pleaded guilty to three counts of conspiracy to defraud and money laundering offences. Abiola, a Nigerian national with leave to remain in the UK was also found guilty of four counts of conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and possession of criminal property.

They were both sentenced to jail this week. Thomas was sentenced to seven years in jail while Abiola received two-and-a-half years sentence.

The Judge who read his sentence indicated Thomas should be deported after serving his time in the UK.

Flood disaster 55 Feared Dead as Boat Capsizes Near Lokoja

It is feared that, at least, 55 persons fleeing the flood disaster in Benue State died yesterday in a boat mishap on their way to Lokoja, Kogi State, where they had hoped to find succour.

According to a member of the Benue State House of Assembly, Honourable Audu Sule, who called our reporter last night to break the news of the tragedy, he learnt about the disaster when some survivors put a distress call through to him.
Audu said the victims included women and children from rural areas in Agatu-speaking communities in Benue State. He said their homes and farmlands had been washed away in the floods that have swept through North-Central States.

The lawmaker explained further that the villagers had left their devastated villages in wooden boats to seek refuge with their kinsmen near Lokoja in Kogi State.

He added that the victims of the boat accident may have come from the following villages: Oweto, Adeka, Agbobe, Adagbo, Eminyi, Ologba and Bagana in Benue State.

It was difficult to obtain official confirmation of the accident last night. The Police in Lokoja told our reporter last night that the Marine Police had been rendered incapacitated because floods had washed away their operational base, hence they could not confirm the report of the accident.

In Benue State, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ejike Alaribe, who spoke to our correspondent, said he was not aware of the boat mishap, adding that if it occurred near Lokoja, then it is the Kogi Police Command that should be asked to confirm the accident.

However, the Benue State Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Mr John Ngbede, who hails from Agatu, said he should be given time to make necessary contacts to confirm the story, while the State's Emergency Management Agency's Secretary, Mr. Adikpo Agbatese, told Sunday Trust that the agency had made appeals to Agatu people to relocate from their villages to SEMA camps, but they rejected the offer.

Meanwhile, the LGEA Primary School camp for people displaced by flood in Lokoja has been submerged in water, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported yesterday.

The head of the camp, Mr Joe Uhunmwangho, told NAN in Lokoja that the state government had been notified, adding that the people would be relocated to another primary school in the area.

He said that 187 displaced persons, comprising 75 female and 56 male adults, 27 male and 29 female children, were currently being kept in the camp.

Uhunmwangho said the camp was one of the three established in Lokoja in the wake of the flooding of the state capital.

He said relief materials such as clothes, blanket and food items had been supplied to the camp by emergency relief agencies and the state government.

He, however, said there was a need for a medical team and an ambulance in the camp, saying that majority of the people appeared to be in need of medical attention.

Uhunmwangho said a pregnant woman at the camp gave birth to a baby girl on Friday through caesarian operation at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja.

He said the woman and her baby were in good condition.

Flood takes over Anam

overnor Peter Obi  of  Anambra State has solicited for assistance to tackle the effects of ravaging floods.

He made this call Saturday while touring the affected local governments of Ayamelu, Ogbaru, Anambra West and Anambra East.

The governor, who had a hectic day accessing the affected areas in canoe, cancelled his planned trip  to Mexico tomorrow on the reason that it is only a man devoid of feeling for his people that would travel out from the state for whatever reason, while his people faced dangers of death and displacement.

"The only trip I am disposed to undertake for now is answering calls to come for aid for the affected communities or for discussions on how to mitigate the suffering of those affected", the governor said.

Governor Peter Obi , with Anglican Bishop of Mbamili, Most Rev. Henry Okeke transversing what was once a sprawling community of Umueze Anam in a boat.
In some of the communities he visited, he held meetings with the stakeholders on the best possible way to render immediate assistance to the people. Besides giving  directives to his cabinet members from affected communities to stay with their people and take charge of government support to them in the form of relief materials, the state has also set up camps for the displaced and sent vehicles and boats to evacuate those who are trapped in different parts of Anambra  including those taking refuge on tree tops.

In  some of the places visited, flood has completely taken over. Buildings as tall as three stories and palm trees were completely covered by flood.

" We have not borrowed a dime or raised bond, but the crisis we are facing now is better seen than explained. We will continue to do everything possible to see that our people are taken care of even if it means borrowing this time around", Obi said.

At Ogbaru,  Obi visited some camps where women were seen cooking food for the displaced. After monitoring events, he ordered more ambulances to be sent to some accessible camps for medical emergencies.

Kuburat, girl with cancer, cries out for help

Kubura Sofunde, a  Federal Polytechnic Ilaro graduate, suffering from chronic breast cancer, is now in critical state.  She has therefore taken it upon herself to personally appeal to Nigerians to do  more  to save  her life.

Breast cancer, especially when it is chronic, is expensive to treat.  Kubura, whose father, a retired WAEC official, appreciates some sympathetic Nigerians who assisted with some  donations added to what had been spent on the problem so far, said the victim will have to commence another round of treatment.  Each injection weekly, her LUTH doctors said, will  cost about N33,000 and she has to be administered same indefinitely.

"Till date, over N500,000 has been spent on my treatment and I still require about  same amount to continue my treatment. As a matter of urgency, I  require  blood transfusion, another round of chemotherapy (one round cost N33,000 per week and I am scheduled to take six), surgical operation to remove the lump, a radiotherapy (down payment of N100,000 is required at LUTH) and subsequent medications.

Kubura Sofunde…before cancer struck anjd now
"Apart from the pain, emotional and psychological depression I am experiencing currently emanating from the knowledge that my situation could become irredeemable if I do not act, the treatment requires a timely and decisiveness if I have to live. This boils down to my constraint, finance.

"I urgently seek the support and assistance of well-meaning Nigerians, NGOs' and the relevant government agencies to come to my aid to enable me finance my cancer treatment.

"I noticed a lump on my left breast in 2009 during my compulsory one year industrial attachment program and immediately sought medical attention. It was discovered to be cancerous and, had since commenced treatment.

"During the course of my treatment, I have undergone one surgical operation and two sets of rounds of chemotherapy. All these I have been able to achieve through the help and support of my family and some well-meaning Nigerians who became aware of my situation through a publication in a national daily and decided to support.

"All avenues to continue my treatment have been exhausted. My retired civil servant dad's savings has been drained on my treatment and the support coming from the members of the family is no more enough to cater to finance  my treatment.

"This is my story and I am calling on the good people of Nigeria to come to my aid and save a life of a once lively, energetic, ambitious young lady get back on her feet."

Donations for her support can be forwarded to GTB, Anthony Village Branch, Lagos.

Farouk wore explosive underwear for weeks’

The underwear bomber's explosives failed to go off during the 2009 Christmas Day plot because he wore the potentially deadly underwear for three weeks before trying to detonate them, FBI agents involved in the investigation said.
Two FBI agents told the ABC News' Detroit affiliate WXYZ that when the bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, confessed to the plot, he went on to say that he had worn the explosive underwear for three weeks  to get used to it and make sure he could get it through security.

"We think ultimately, that probably is what caused a little bit of separation in the sequence of events in the explosion," said FBI agent Ted Peissig, who interrogated Abdulmutallab.

Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty last year to attempting to blow up

Northwest Flight 253 over Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009.

He was able to get through security and onto the plane, but the underwear bomb he was wearing failed to detonate. Instead, it caught fire, severely burning Abdulmutallab.

He was given multiple life sentences, and the agents revealed to WXYZ that Abdulmutallab was not recruited by al Qaeda, but the other way around.

"He sought out al Qaeda relentlessly," another FBI agent on the case, Mike Connelly said. "He persisted and he was almost turned away at times, you know, by al Qaeda. But he refused to relent."

Connelly was one of the FBI agents tapped with travelling to Abdulmutallab's hometown in Nigeria shortly after the incident.

OSOUFIA’S HOUSE BUGGLED…LOSES CARS, LAPTOPS, CAMERA TO ROBBERS

For God who had made it possible for him to be away that night, it would have been another omen for the industry as Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh popularly called Osoufia was the latest victim of armed robbery attack in Enugu. Robbers raided his home over the weekend carting away his Jeep and his other valuables.

According to the actor, one of his neighbours called him on Saturday to inform him that his house has been burgled.

The intruders stole his laptop, camcorder and his Mitsubishi Montero Jeep with plate# BU 64 FST during a raid on his house at Phase 6, Trans Ekulu in Enugu.

Here is what the actor said in regards to the burglary:

“I was in Abuja last week Saturday when my neighbours called that it was like my place was burgled, that my gate appeared to be open.

“I asked them to check and they reported back that out of the three vehicles parked in the compound, the Jeep was no longer there.

“I called my driver and asked him to make a report to the police immediately, which he did.”

Osoufia claimed the robbers got rid of the burglary roof on his windows thereby stealing his laptop.

He has reported the case to the police for further investigation

Qatar airplane lands safely after making a distress call at MMIA

A Qatar Airplane coming from Doha has landed safely at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos, after its tyre burst mid-flight.

Airport and security agencies had put apparatus in place for a possible emergency landing after the aircraft made a distress call.

The Qatar owned plane however landed without hitches.

The management of the airline and airport authorities are briefing newsmen on the incident now.

Our aviation correspondent, who inspected the air plane after it landed, said "the tyre lost pressure and the pilot knew he might land and not taxi so he radioed for emergency landing but unfortunately after many trials the tyre retracted and he landed without help"

Joe-Oketunbi said the pilot radioed for emergency as a precautionary measure.

EFCC Arrests Man With $7M At MMIA

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a suspected bulk currency smuggler, Abubakar Tijani Sheriff, for attempting to smuggle $7m out of Nigeria.

Although the details of the arrest were sketchy at press time, it was gathered that the 24-year-old was arrested on Thursday at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on his way to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

The suspect is being detained in the commission's custody in Lagos pending his arraignment in court.

He was said to have escaped security scrutiny from other agencies at the airport but was apprehended at the point of boarding the plane by operatives of the commission.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the arrest.

The commission warned travellers, who, for any reason, want to move bulk cash out of the country, to "do so through the banking system; otherwise, they must be prepared to declare it and explain the source of the money."

How My Wife Saved Me From Plane Crash –Nollywood Actor

Veteran Nollywood actor and former president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ejike Asiegbu and his wife, Ogechi, narrate their love story and successful marriage in this interview.

How long have you been married?

Ejike: 15 going on to 16 years.

How did you meet your wife?

Ejike: I met her in Port Harcourt where I went to shoot a movie, 'Pregnant Virgin'. It was a point in my life when I wanted to settle down and I had asked God to show me my wife. I remember vividly I was even fasting.I just finished my meal and she crossed to my side of the road. I spoke to her and realised that she was part of the cast.

So you went after her?

Ejike: I did and it was not easy. I tried to get through other people but it did not work until I took the bull by the horns. To cut the long story short, we became friends and started talking.

What were those things you saw in her that pushed to grab her?

Ejike: I told God that as an entertainer, he should give me a woman that would love me, tolerate me as a man, understand and persevere with me in my growth in life. Also, there was one significant thing that happened. It was going to be my birthday and I had to travel back to be with my sisters, who had made plans to host a party for me. I was to fly ADC. As my fiancée then, she had insisted that if I loved her, I should cancel my trip and celebrate my birthday with her. Reluctantly, I did. But you won't believe that the plane I was supposed to have flown crashed. That was the ADC plane that crashed in Ejirin on November 7, 1996. That was how she saved my life. I did not need to be convinced any further that she was for me. At that point I did not waste any more time. I went straight to my father and told him I had found a wife.

Did you entertain any fears about getting married to someone in the movie industry?

Ogechi: Definitely I did. With what I saw on the screen then, I had serious fears but all that became history. For the one year we dated, I used to go on location with him and that way I was able to familiarise myself with how things work on set. Obviously, I have outgrown whatever fears I had.

Was there a formal proposal?

Ogechi: There was nothing like that. From the moment we met and became friends, he had always talked about marriage. Also, meeting his family hastened a lot of things because they all fell in love with me.

Fifteen years of marriage, how has the journey been?

Ejike: It has been wonderful. I must say that I am a lucky man in the sense that everything I wanted in a woman, my wife possesses it and more, she is a good manager of resources. I can trust her to pull off anything even if I were not there. I can leave the running of the home to her and go to sleep. If you notice, I go everywhere with my wife because I am proud of her.

There must have been some challenges…

Ejike: When we decided to get married, we promised to make it work at all cost. I think one of the challenges we have is that she tells me certain things and I don't listen because I want to do it my way. Sometimes, I just do things without telling her and when per chance it boomerangs, I now go back to her. The good thing is, she does not turn me back. I get a very warm embrace and a listening ear. We have our little arguments here and there, but you don't read about them on the pages of newspapers because we are a mature couple.

So, who is the first to apologise when you quarrels?

Ogechi: It's my husband; you know how we women like to pose. Sometimes, when we have not argued for a long time, I just look for a way to bring up an argument so that he can beg me. He just laughs over it because he understands me very well.

What do you do when it's just the two of you?

Ogechi: We have four children and and with my niece make five. So we are busy with them all through the week. We do not joke with our weekends. Even when he can't come along, I hang out with my friends and he comes to pick me wherever I am.

Ejike: We got married on February 13. It is a must that we spend Valentine's Day together because it's a day after our wedding anniversary. We deliberately chose that day because we wanted to celebrate love.

Is she also in charge of your wardrobe?

Ejike: Oh yes, she is. She shops for me and chooses what I wear daily. When I am stubborn sometimes, she refrains from choosing my clothes. She knows that I like to dress simple.

Are there times you wished he were not a public figure?

Ogechi: Maybe in the early days of our marriage when I had to do certain things alone because of his very tight schedule. Now, my children are grown up and they are a handful, so I don't feel it again.

Is there anything you would like to change about your husband?

Ogechi: He is too trusting and people exploit that aspect of him. He easily believes people and when I try to dissuade him, he does not listen until everything falls apart.

Do you have pet names for each other?

Ogechi: He has always called me mummy because of my organisational skills and I call him honey.

What are the secrets of a successful union?

Ejike: Trust is very essential. You have to learn to be tolerant because marriage is about tolerance. You must humble yourself before your wife and believe in the adage, do unto others as you want others to do unto you. Marriage is beyond ego keeping or chauvinism, your wife is your better half. So, whatever you do, put her in mind, most especially because you are from two tdifferent backgrounds. A man must learn to forgive. It is not everything a woman says that you give respond to. My wife is hot-tempered and there are times she would bombard me with text messages. In those days, I would get mad and would reply her, she would text back again and the circle will continue like that. Later, I learnt to just ignore her. When she sends any nasty text message, I just pretend like nothing happened. When I get home, she would ask if I got her texts, then I would ask her, 'which text? and just wave it off. She just gets perplexed.

Are you from the same state?

Ejike: Yes. We are both from Umuahia, Abia State, ibut before marriage, she was from Nkwerre in Imo State.

Abuja-Lokoja road re-opens

The flooded portion of the Abuja-Lokoja highway which led to the closure of the road on Sunday has been recovered through the joint efforts of Gitto, Julius Berger and RCC construction companies. Consequently, the road was re-opened at about 7:45 pm yesterday, Special Adviser to the minister of works on media Tony Ikpasaja has said.

The Abuja-Lokoja highway, a major road that links the Federal Capital territory with many parts of southern Nigeria was closed to motorists on Sunday by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for safety reasons.

Hundreds of people travelling from the north to south and vice versa were trapped on opposite sides of the River Niger since Sunday. Passengers travelling to Abuja and other parts of the North now pay N500 to board an engine boat from Mpata area to Banda, where they board vehicles to Abuja.
Some motorists were said to have paid as much as between fifteen thousand naira to be ferried across with their vehicles.

Consequent upon the blockade of the highway, the FRSC gave alternative routes as follows: "vehicles coming from Lagos – Okene – Lokoja- Abuja should use Okene – Ajaokuta – Ayangba – Ankpa – Makurdi Lafiya- Akwanga- Abuja.

A statement from the office of the FRSC in Lokoja also said: "Those coming from the South-East should use Otukpa – Makurdi route. The ones from Abuja to Lokoja should use Akwanga – Lafiya- Makurdi – Ankpa – Okene down to Lokoja with massive deployment of personnel to the alternative routes to ensure free flow of traffic."

The Minister of Works Arc Mike Onolememen on Monday said during his visit to the flooded location, promised Nigerians that the road would be recovered in three days.

He thereafter directed the three construction companies to work day and night to effect quick recovery of the road to reduce the agony of motorists.

Our correspondent who was at the Banda area of the road yesterday in company of the police observed Gitto, Julius Berger and RCC construction companies working to block the water and open the road.

One engineer with Gitto construction company, Ajani Adeyemo, told Daily Trust that work on the road would be completed last night so that motorists can continue their journeys.

IG takes over investigation of Ugochukwu’s death

Following the un-ending controversy surrounding the mysterious killing of Mr. Ugochukwu Ozuah in Lagos on September 20, 2012, five days after his wedding, allegedly by men in Police uniform, Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered the immediate take over of the case by a crack team of homicide investigators from Force Criminal Investigations Department, FCID, Abuja.

The high-powered investigation team from the FCID, which left Abuja, yesterday, is to immediately take-over the investigation of the case from the Lagos State Police Command, with the mandate to identify and fish out the killer(s).

Confirming the development in a statement yesterday, Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, said: "The IGP's directive is necessitated by the need to maintain neutrality, professionalism, speedy and holistic dispensation of justice."

While commiserating with the family, friends and relations of the deceased, the IG reassured the nation that the Force will do everything humanly and operationally possible to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime were unmasked and eventually brought to book.

He appealed to members of the public, especially those who may have witnessed the crime, to come forward with useful information that could aid the Police in tracking the felons, assuring members of public that they were at liberty to use the special Police email policemonitor@npf.gov.ng in relaying useful information touching on this case.

Furthermore, the IG promised that the Special Investigating Team charged with the handling of this case will be releasing special dedicated phone lines for purposes of interaction with members of the public as soon as they were on ground in Lagos.

Producer of anti-Islam film arrested

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the man allegedly behind the inflammatory film "Innocence of Muslims," was ordered held without bail Thursday after being arrested in California and accused of violating his probation.

"He engaged in a likely pattern of deception both to his probation officers and the court," Judge Suzanne Segal said in issuing her ruling.

The preliminary bail hearing began with Segal asking the defendant -- dressed in gray slacks and a white and yellow striped T-shirt, with handcuffs and chain around his waist -- what his true name was.

"Mark Basseley Yousseff," he replied.

The judge then asked again, what is your name?

"Mark Basseley," he said this time, again without spelling the name out.

The lawyer for the suspect, who has used at least 17 false names, according to court documents, but is mostly referred to as Nakoula, then argued for $10,000 bail.

Attorney Steve Seiden said his client had always maintained contact, in person and by telephone, with probation officers who have been monitoring him since his 2010 bank fraud conviction. But the main reason Nakoula shouldn't be jailed, his lawyer argued, was for safety reasons, saying the anti-Islam film would make him a target of fellow inmates.

"It is a danger for him to remain in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles because there are a large number of Muslims in there," Seiden said. "We are extremely concerned about his safety."

Making no mention of aliases, the lawyer added that Nakoula had made no attempt to flee Southern California and never would.

Saudi-Arabia deports more Nigerian women pigrims

Saudi Arabia yesterday ignored protests by the Nigerian government over the deportation of female pilgrims to the holyland as the Saudi authorities deported another batch of 510 Nigerian female pilgrims to this year's hajj. 171 pilgrims had earlier been deported on Wednesday.
The authorities of Saudi Arabia insisted that the women were unaccompanied by male relations which was considered against laid down rules of the kingdom.
An adamant Saudi Arabia has so far refused to yield any ground to Nigeria on the issue of alleged unaccompanied female pilgrims, in spite of spirited diplomatic efforts by the Federal Government.
An intriguing development was that the husband of one of the female deportees also returned home with his wife, in protest, when the Saudi Authorities refused to clear his wife, even after explaining that he was the husband of the woman.
A highly placed source at the National Hajj Commission who disclosed this said that the return (in protest) by the male pilgrim in question was an indication that there was more to the stance of the Saudi authorities than meets the eyes.
He said: "On board of the plane bringing the women is also a male pilgrim.  He decided to return home with his wife in protest when his explanations and entreaties to the fact that his wife was accompanied fell on deaf ears. That shows clearly that there is more to the issue than meets the eyes".
It was learnt that the Chairman of the commission, Mallam Mohammed Bello, had a hectic day in Abuja, yesterday, as he had to shuttle between the Presidency and the National Assembly to brief his bosses in the executive, as well as, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, who is the leader of the Federal Government delegation to this year's hajj.
Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were, until yesterday, still making efforts to get the necessary clearance for a Federal Government delegation to visit Saudi Arabia with a view to resolving the issue.
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan  had on Wednesday constituted a Presidential delegation to interface with the Saudi authorities over the issue surrounding the detained Nigerian female pilgrims at King Abdul-Azziz International Airport, Jeddah.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, named Aminu  Tambuwal as leader of that delegation.
Other members are: Minister of State II for  Foreign Affairs,  Dr. Nuruddeen Mohammed, Ambassador Shehu Galadanchi;  Sheikh Sherif Saleh and Chairman of the Hajj Commission, Muhammad Bello.
The delegation is expected to depart for Saudi Arabia as soon as an appointment is finalised with the appropriate Saudi authorities.
Senate had on Wednesday asked President Goodluck Jonathan to liaise with the King of Saudi Arabia, King Fahad Abdulaziz to allow over 1, 500 Nigerian female pilgrims stranded in Saudi airport entry into the holy land to perform their hajj.
The directive was upon the adoption of a motion entitled, 'Refusal of the Saudi Arabian Authority to grant entry to over 500 Nigerian female pilgrims' sponsored by Senator Atiku Bagudu.
Leading debate on the motion, Bagudu lamented the refusal of Saudi Arabian authorities to allow the pilgrims entry into the country despite fulfilling all visa requirements.
He said, "Over 500 Nigerian female pilgrims from the various states of the federation that arrived Saudi Arabia for this year's hajj were denied entry upon arrival at the airport in Jedda and Medina.
"All the requirements for visa and entry into Saudi Arabia had been met by the pilgrims and were still denied entry."
The motion was widely supported by Senators as some of them that spoke yesterday urged Nigerian government to quickly intervene in the crisis, adding that the stranded pilgrims are going through untold hardships.
Senator Uche Chukwumerije, PDP, Abia while contributing to the motion asked the Federal Government to develop a new foreign policy that will protect Nigerians abroad.
He said, "Nigeria must take a robust diplomatic position and make it clear to the world that any Nigeria anywhere must be given protection of that place, if they failed, we are going to visit same on their citizens here."
Chukwumerije also urged the Senate to mandate local coordinating authorities to ensure that pilgrims fulfill all the legal requirements of Saudi Arabia before embarking on pilgrimage.
Senate President, David Mark, who presided over the motion in his ruling, decried the situation despite interventions from Federal Government.
Mark urged the Saudi Arabia authorities to allow the pilgrims perform their religious obligation having arrived in the country.
He said, "I think that from the effort so made by the Minister of foreign affairs, rather than urge government, I think that we should ask the President to talk directly with the Saudi king because the way they operate there, nobody else may make any difference. The foreign Affairs Minister has done all he can, he has spoken to his counterpart, he has invited the ambassador, they have done whatever they possibly can and nothing has changed
"Our pilgrim having gone this far, we should insist that they should be allowed to perform the hajj and if there are lessons, we will take the necessary corrections."
It will be recalled that no fewer than 1200  Nigerian female pilgrims from Taraba and Katsina states who were denied entry into Saudi Arabia and deported from the Medina airport, yesterday  arrived the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, ..
Meanwhile, the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Khalid Abdrabuh yesterday gave an  assurance that the controversy over the detention of  about 1,200   female Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia will be resolved today.
More than 908 women were detained at the Jeddah Airport  while   171 of them were deported to Nigeria on Wednesday.
The Saudi Ambassador  explained that the issue of detention of pilgrims who failed to meet entry requirements was not restricted to Nigeria. According to him, some pilgrims from other countries have also been subjected to similar screening on arrival at the Holy Land.
He also  hinted that  officials of the Saudi  Ministry of Hajj were already  holding talks with a delegation of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mecca on the issue.
He  made the pledge shortly after meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal at the National Assembly.
The Federal Government had  on Wednesday given  the Saudi Arabian government 24 hours to resolve the issue. The Vice President, Namadi Sambo who  gave the order also appointed  Tambuwal as  head of federal government delegation to Saudi Arabia to resolve the impasse.
On the strenght of that presidential intervention, Tambuwal met with the Saudi Arabian envoy behind closed doors on Thursday where the duo deliberated on the way out of the pilgrimage  standoff.
Tambuwal who spoke to journalists at the end of the meeting also   disclosed   that the Nigerian mission in Riyadh has been  meeting with the  Saudi authorities to resolve the situation.
However,  chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, has warned that Nigeria will not hesitate to bring back her people if the issue was  not resolved today

Hajj commission suspends all flights to Mecca

With the on-going diplomatic row between Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over the detention of almost 1,000 female pilgrims and deportation of 171 females for coming to Hajj without male companions, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has temporarily suspended all Hajj flights for the next 48 hours.

This was announced in a statement on Thursday, signed by Abdullahi Mukhtar Muhammad, despite the optimism expressed by the Saudi Arabian ambassador to Nigeria.

The ambassador, Mr. Khaled Abdrabuh, had earlier stated that the controversy over the detention of 908 female Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia and the deportation of some will be resolved later today.

According to the statement, the Hajj Commission claimed it has been "compelled to temporarily suspend all Hajj flights for the next 48 hours", "following the unprecedented and worrisome development of detaining over 1000 female pilgrims from Nigeria at the King Abdulazeez International Airport Jeddah and Prince Muhammad Ibn azeez International Airport Madinah."

The Commission claimed it is taking this step after wide consultation with all stakeholders.

"This is to enable the Commission appraise the situation critically with the view to surmount all the challenges being faced" the statement added.

The Hajj Commission urged "all intending pilgrims to remain calm as all hands are on deck to resolve the issue and hajj flights will resume once resolved."

We have sent an email to the school officials in order to confirm the authenticity of the email content.

NECO records improvement in SSCE examinations

For the first time in six years, a remarkable improvement has been recorded in the results of the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) released by the National Examinations Council (NECO).

The results as released by the NECO's Registrar, Professor Promise Okpala, revealed that over 50 per cent of the over 1 million candidates that sat for the core subjects of English language, mathematics, economics and biology got credit passes and above.

This is against the persistent and dismal 20 per cent recorded in the last five years.

According to Professor Okpala, there was a marked improvement in other core subjects of Chemistry, Physics, Government and Commerce as over 45 per cent of the candidates scored credit passes and above as against 15 per cent last year.

However, a massive failure was recorded in most Nigerian languages as only about 10 per cent scored credit passes and above in the minority languages of Edo, Ibibio and Efik.

Professor Okpala further revealed that the council has banned 13 schools across Imo, Anambra, Kano, Cross-rivers, Nassarawa, Rivers and Benue states for a period of two years for their involvement in mass examinations malpractice.

John Terry gets four match ban and fine for racial abuse

John Terry has been banned and fined by the English Football Association over his racial abuse on Anton Ferdinand.

The Chelsea captain was been banned for four international matches and fined £220,000 for racially abusing QPR defender.

The Football Association found Terry guilty, following a four day hearing.

The FA's decision to press ahead with their own charges led Terry, on the eve of the hearing, to announce he was retiring from international football with immediate effect, saying his position was "untenable".

A spokesman for Terry said the player was "disappointed" the FA had reached a "different conclusion" to the "not guilty verdict of a court of law".

"He has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal" the statement continued.

Terry will have 14 days from receiving the written reasons to decide whether to lodge an appeal. The ban and fine will not come into effect until after the centre-half has decided what to do.

A statement from his club added: "Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today's decision by the Football Association regarding John Terry.

"We also recognise that John has the right to appeal that decision. It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time."

The FA charged Terry in July with "using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Ferdinand and which included a reference to colour and/or race contrary to FA Rule E3[2]".

Terry admitted using the word "black" and swearing at Ferdinand in the match at Loftus Road on 23 October 2011 but insisted he had only been repeating words he thought the Rangers defender had accused him of saying.

Terry's legal team argued the governing body's own rules dictated that his acquittal in court meant the case could not proceed but the FA believed their charge was distinct from the court charge.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was given an eight-match ban when an FA disciplinary panel found him guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra last season.

The panel stated at that time that simply using racist language was enough to constitute a breach of FA rules.

In July, the ex-England captain, 31, was cleared by Westminster Magistrates' Court of racially abusing Ferdinand.

“Nigerians don’t want to elect credible leaders” –Pastor Kumuyi

Respected cleric and General Overseer of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Williams Kumuyi, has lamented that the reason why corruption and bad leadership still persist in the country is the inability of the electorate to vote for a responsible leader.
He maintained that until Nigeria elects a credible candidate, the nation’s problem would continue.

The Man of God said this in Abuja yesterday ahead of the forthcoming four-day programme entitled, ‘Divine connection for full freedom’, slated for Friday, September 23.

He said, “Our problem can be zeroed in on the leaders we elect and the people we put in places of power and positions, and this matters a lot. So what I will say first is that what the electorate should do now is to begin to see how we elect the right people to the places of authority and decision making.

“If we can resolve that, I think a lot of our problems will be solved. Many times, the people with money also have good communication and they can get into places of authority; but if we begin to define the kind of country we are looking forward to and the people that can lead us to the place where we want to be, we will get it right.

“I think if we elect people based on what they can deliver rather than what they just say, we will get it right. They can deliver very well, looking at their track records and what they have been before being elected, I think it will be part of the solution to the problem.”

Kumuyi who lamented over the security situation of the country and the natural disaster occasioned by flood that has recently descended on the nation said that all Nigerians must draw closer to God, buttressing that only Him has the answer.

Aerial view images of flooding around River Niger in Lokoja

The images were released by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and shows the extent of the flooding in the city caused by the overflowing River Niger, which is virtually cutting off the Northern part of the country from the South. A lot of small villages in Lokoja and Kogi will soon be wiped out if nothing is done soon. The flooding has left many dead, thousands homeless, and movement from one place to the other impossible.

The flooding started about two weeks ago after Cameroon released water from the Lagdo Dam.
The minister of works said that the level of water seen in the past two weeks has not been seen in the last 100 years.

The federal government has contracted three major construction companies to free the submerged Lokoja-Abuja highway from flooding...and NEMA is currently camping thousands of displaced flood victims. More photos when you continue...

Tycoon offers $65m to marry off gay daughter

Are you an eligible bachelor ready to marry? Can you play a lovey-dovey and win the heart of a 33 year old beautiful woman, who already has a same-sex loving attraction to another woman?

If you fit these descriptions, catch the next plane for Paris or Hong kong in search of Gigi Chao, daughter of a Hong Kong billionaire.

The Hong Kong businessman has offered a $65 million “marriage bounty” to any man who can win the heart of his lesbian daughter, a report said Wednesday.

Cecil Chao announced the financial reward of HK$500 million after his daughter, Gigi, married her same-sex partner of seven years in France earlier this year, the South China Morning Post reported.

“I don’t mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind hearted,” 76-year-old Chao was quoted as saying.

“Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work,” he added.

He also rejected “false reports” that Gigi, 33, had married abroad, saying she was still single.

Chao, who owns publicly-listed property developer Cheuk Nang, could not be reached for comment.

Same-sex marriages are not recognised in Hong Kong, a socially conservative Chinese city where homosexuality was decriminalised in 1991.

Chao is well known in Hong Kong’s social circles and regularly appears at public events with his latest young girlfriend.

He reportedly once claimed to have had intimate relations with 10,000 women.

agos robberies: Three suspects in police net

Three armed robbery suspects-Uche Okeagbu, Emmanuel Ezeani and Chinonso Nwuangwu-have been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos, in connection with the September 9, 2012 robberies in the state, which left three policemen and a civilian dead.

The suspects were arrested at their Ajangbadi hideout on September 23 following a tip-off.

The suspects were said to members of a much larger group, which had about three weeks ago, carried out simultaneous robberies in Gbagada, Agege, Anthony, Ojodu, Itire, Ikeja and Ilasamaja areas of the state.

It was learnt that after 23-year-old Okeagbu was arrested, his confession led to the recovery of a large cache of ammunition, one rocket propel grenade launcher, 225 AK 47 magazines fully-loaded, over 10,000 rounds of AK 47 live ammunition, two general purpose machine guns, 260 rounds of GPMG live ammunition, five dynamite with detonator and nine AK 47 rifles.

A self employed oil dealer before his foray into armed robbery, Okeagbu told us that he was once based in Port Harcourt.

He said, “I was an oil dealer in Port Harcourt before a friend introduced me to this gang. I have been with them for a while and during the time, I went with them for four operations in Ibadan where I got N500,000 as my share. Another was in Uyo where I got N800, 000. I also got N800, 000 for the First Bank robbery at Share, Kwara State and N100,000 for the Lagos robbery. All these took place this year.

“In all these operations, the targets were banks which we robbed successfully. I never went with the group into the banks. I always stayed back with the driver in the car because I was scared but I didn’t go with the gang when they raided Lagos three weeks ago.”

A SARS team led by, Mr. Abba Kyari, found the gang’s armoury in two Volkswagen buses with registration numbers LSD 467 AR and AGL 506 XB, parked at Okeagbu’s residence at Ajangbadi.

Also, Nwuangwu said he took part in four robbery operations at Diamond Bank, Akure, in Ondo State, UBA, Osogbo in Osun State, GTB Okene, in Kogi State and Skyebank, Auchi, in Edo State.

The 23year-old said, “I was merely the driver of the vehicles. I just drove them to whereever they had an operation. I used to be an oil dealer in Port Harcourt before I joined the gang but I have stopped going with them for operations for a while now.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, said the suspects were members of the gang that terrorised Lagos about three weeks ago.

Manko said, “After the Lagos operation, the group proceeded to Ilorin where they robbed a bank and attacked a police station. We are still on the trail of the remaining members of the gang.

“Apart from the arms and ammunition recovered, we also seized a Toyota Camry belonging to the gang. The car was fitted with sensors and camera. That way, the robbers could monitor whatever was going on behind them.

“I would also like to say that since the September 9 robbery operations that the command has not recorded any other robbery incident. There have been robbery attempts in several parts of the state but these have been quelled by the police.

“I encourage the public to continue to come forward with useful information of any suspicious activity around them because that was how we got information on these suspects.”

Domestic Violence: Frank Edoho & Zaki Adzay Abused Ex-wives Speak Out (Video)

which encouraged Molestation victims to speak out; and the Peace Prayer Outreach in Kwara State which enriched the lives of those in need and advocated for understanding between religions. These efforts all served to promote peace, non-violence and solidarity within Nigeria and more importantly advanced the vision of Peace One Day.

Obiang who was once married to the 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' host, Frank Edoho said, "Just to dare to argue with your husband is like a challenge in your home. The woman is challenging the man and tempers flay and then you snap, then there is a slap. He says 'I am sorry it is a mistake' then says 'sorry I won't do it again,' then he does it again, again and again.

Narrating a particular incident, Hadiza, estranged wife of musician Zaki Adzay, said, "he slapped me on the face so (and said) 'get up you must abort this pregnancy today. Now that I am married to you, you want to hook me with pregnancy because I am a celebrity.' Then there was a wardrobe in our room so I put my tummy in there and then he continued beating me. He had some folic acid in his hand and said I should swallow it and abort the pregnancy. When he gave me I said he should allow me take water, thank God the door was open so I ran away."

21 oil companies risk collapse as CBN forecloses further credit

NO fewer than 20 oil companies are under threats of liquidation as the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, forecloses further credit facilities to them.

This followed last week release by CBN of a new debtor list by companies and organizations in excess of N5billion.

The 21 companies combined are indebted to the financial institution to the tune of over N513.34billion, which were obtained as loans from various banks to run their operations.

The CBN had earlier released a circular, prohibiting credit facilities to debtors of the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, which the financial services regulator said was in continuation of its efforts “to strengthen financial stability and entrenching a culture of financial discipline.”

In view of the high level of indebtedness, the CBN banned banks “from approving or disbursing any new credit facilities to all persons and organizations in this list with effect from the date of this circular, until full liquidation of agreed indebtedness to AMCON.”

The regulator also warned banks that failure to adhere to the rule would attract a penalty worth 100 percent of the principal and interest outstanding in the account of the customer.

Although some of the debts listed against the oil companies are litigations, while others classified under various states such as performing, restricted, ongoing negotiation and a host of others s listed below:Early reactions by analysts indicate that some of these companies may never recover from the damage this measure would have on their continued operations.

True Confession: He met her on Twitter, now his life is a complete mess

fter that Yemi (@Losgiddy) story,I made up my mind to share this story about the experience one of my friends(Femi) had. He met this virgin babe on twitter early this year, they started from RTing each other’s tweets to admiring each other’s avatars to DM then BBM,to calling and visiting each other (only the girl visits though). Femi never had the intention to go out with the babe (hausa babe named Abiba but grew up in Ibadan) but he was desperate to get into this fine babes pant & as he’s a fine boy,it was easier for him.

After about 4weeks of lies and persistence,Femi finally convinced Abiba that he was genuinely in love with her so she decided to allow him disvirgin her but before then she made him promise just 1 thing; Never to cheat on her. Ofcos,Femi was konjified&couldn’t think straight,so he promised..Only few weeks after dating,Femi started setting other twitter P,Abiba confronted him really shedding tears but he denied, she told him to swear which he did & told the girl to do whatever she likes to him if he cheats.

After 3months and some days, Abiba caught Femi having sex with another girl in his apartment, she was heartbroken so the left the scene. Before we knew what was happening, she deleted Femi off BBM,closed her twitter account (@Abyxxba92) & her number has never been reachable since then. Weeks after the incident,Femi had a serious accident with his EOD,his apartment got burnt,so he was evicted and Femi has been living a nightmare, praying for a miracle. Dunno if its just a coincidence or Abiba is a witch but Femi’s life is meaningless at the moment if U know the where about of @Abyxxba92 please holla.

5,000 note: “Jonathan was deceived” – House of Rep member

A member of the House of Representatives, Taofeek Buraimo, yesterday, aired his views on the controversial currency, saying President Goodluck Jonathan was blindfolded, deceived, and misled by his government.

While speaking with the press in Sagamu after meeting with the ACN leaders, the obviously agitated Buraimo, representing Remo Federal Constituency on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, didn’t mince words as he accused the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Lamido Sanusi, of being in shade and out of tune with the reality of the Nigerian economy. He out rightly condemned the president for falling so cheap and allowing his aides to mislead him into endorsing such “an economically unsound action.”

He said, “Honestly, the President just acted cowardly because everybody knew that we were talking about a cashless society and now, you were introducing the use of N5, 000 notes, for what purpose?”

The lawmaker also noted that the understanding of the economy of Nigeria by the President and Governor of Central Bank should be of a major concern to the citizenry, as they are only representing the wellbeing of the masses.

He said, “I always say that for the likes of Sanusi and Okonjo-Iweala; it’s not about where you have studied or that you have been at the World Bank. Nigeria is a different society; we need people that know what is wrong with their own people before they can be managed.”

But days later, the multiple award-winning screen goddess surprised many when she was pictured wearing a new look. This time, the car brand ambassador and former face of Lux soap wore a low-cut.

In this new look, the prolific silver screen queen looked a bit young and radiant. The 33 years old actress was once described by CNN as Africa's Julia Roberts.

How over 1,000 female Nigerian pilgrims are suffering in Saudi Arabian detention

Not less than one thousand Nigerian female pilgrims have been arrested and detained by the authorities of Saudi Arabia for not presenting their “maharram”, that is, the approved male companion accompanying them on the trip, usually a husband, father or brother.

However, effort is on top gear by the Nigeria government as it has engaged in serious talks with the Saudi authorities in order to resolve the problem, and ensure Nigerians enjoy their stay in the country.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian lady, one of the detainees had narrated her experience to the BBC “Focus on Africa Programme,” The detainees, Bilkisu Nasidi disclosed that the women were being detained in “terrible condition.”

According to her, “as at Monday, we were about 400 and we were being held in very unsuitable circumstance in the prison by the Saudi authorities”.

She said they had been sleeping on the floor for three days, and an average of 200 women share four toilets.

She denied that all of them were without Maharram or guardian and that some of such guardians have opted not to leave the airport in order to give them some comfort.

“If they don’t want us to go into Saudi Arabia let them take us home, we are tired,” Bilkisu Nasidi said.

Also, the Nigerian Consul in Jeddah, Ambassador Abdullahi Umar spoke on BBC Hausa Service on Monday confirmed thatthe Nigerian officials had been providing food and toiletries for the detained pilgrims.

He added that a formal letter had been delivered to the Saudis and the issue was being taken up with the Governor of Makkah region, who would decide on the matter.

Meanwhile, Nigeria government officials and the House of Representatives have criticized the Saudis government for detaining over 1000 Nigerian female pilgrim in the prison over the alleged “maharram”.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON)’s Commissioner of Operations, Alhaji Muhammad Abdullahi Mukhtar in his own reaction when speaking with reporters said the Saudis allegation on Nigerian pilgrims was not true.

According to him,the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards (SMPWB) “qualify and identify as muharram of female pilgrims. And that has been the case for so many decades.”

He said that the situation is so confusing that “the Saudis randomly select flights to screen and detain.”

His words, “All the 10 flights that landed in Medina were allowed into the country without any incidence. Also, flights 23, 24 and 25 were not touched at all”.

Mukhtar wondered why only Nigerian pilgrims were selected for this treatment by the Saudi authorities.

“In fact, there is no such issue in the memorandum of understanding signed between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia,” he said.

The House of Representatives has commenced an investigation into the circumstance leading to the detention of the women whose number has now risen to about 1000 by the Saudi Arabian authorities in Jeddah.

In a motion adopted by the Deputy Minority Leader Rep. Suleiman Kawu Sumaila (ANPP, Kano), the House mandated its Committee on Foreign Affairs to interface with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and report back today.

In his motion, Sumaila expressed shock that the affected pilgrims were people who applied for Saudi Arabian visas, and were approved by its embassy without such rules made known to them.

He said that the action of the Saudi authorities negated the long standing understanding between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia on Hajj performance.

Also, Rep. Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje (PDP,Abia) who chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said her committee was interfacing with officials of the foreign ministry to secure pilgrims release.
