Lagos Hosts First Yoruba Films Festival

Another celebration has come for practitioners in the Yoruba film industry as the city of Lagos hosts the first Yoruba Film Festival in 2013. 

We has reliably learnt that the film festival will match up with what is obtainable in other international and popular film festivals across the globe. 

Organising this event is top show promoter and organiser, Tunde Oshinibosi well known as Laface. He is the brain behind the Yoruba Movie Academy Award, which debutted in 2012 and held in Ogun State in June 2012. 

The Yoruba Film Festival, according to information available to us, is aimed at projecting the culture and tourism potential of the mega city of Lagos through the overwhelming development of the Yoruba film industry. 

The Festival will bring together industry stakeholders across board as well as international facilitators as they come together to chart a new part for the Yoruba film industry; the true pioneers of today’s Nollywood. 

The Festival sessions will include a pot-purri of activities like all other major film festivals across the world i.e. screenings, discussion panels, business sessions, workshops and seminars, comedy, concert and gala night amongst others.

It is also aimed at attracting government and corporate financial interest to the economic realities and the job creation opportunities that the Yoruba film industry offers. Solutions to major problems affecting the growth of the industry i.e. piracy, distribution etc, will also be discussed. 

Laface stated that the Yoruba Film Festival theme is in line with women empowerment, buttressing the saying 'empower the woman and feed the world'.

He therefore called on the government and the general public for the success of the project.

Okada Rider Arraigned For Robbing With Toy Gun

A 21-year-old Okada rider was on Monday remanded by an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly robbing with a toy gun.

Akinyemi Gbenga, who was arraigned before Magistrate O. Sule-Hamzat, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery after he dispossessed his victim of cash and accessories valued at N48,000.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the defendant committed the said offence on January 24, 2013, at Charity Bus Stop, Oshodi, at about 5a.m.

According to him, the defendant, who is an ‘area boy’, along with others now at large, attacked one Juliet Ibekeme.

Unuigbe alleged that the defendant, armed with a black toy gun, robbed Ibekeme of one Nokia 6070 valued at N27,000; jewelleries worth N10,000; cosmetics valued at N5,000; and a cash sum of N6,000.

Unuigbe said the alleged offence contravened Sections 1(2)(a)(b) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provision, 2003.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge when it was read, but he was denied bail.

Magistrate Mrs Sule-Hamzat adjourned the matter to March 19, 2013, while the defendant is to be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from the Director, Public Prosecution DPP.

Court frees seven of the accused persons in Aluu4 case

Seven out of the 18 people arrested and standing trial for the murder of the Aluu4 victims were yesterday discharged by a Port Harcourt Chief Magistrates' Court. Their reason? Not enough evidence to suggest they were involved in the killing.

Those discharged yesterday were: Chinwo Cynthia (the only female suspect), George Nwadei, Ekpe Daniel, Gabriel Agburum, Finebone Jeffrey, Endurance Edet and Gabriel Ochie.

The remaining 11 accused persons, including Alhaji Hassan Walewa, the paramount ruler of Omuokiri-Aluu, will face trial for the murder of Tekena Elkanah, Toku Lloyd, Chiadika Biringa and Ugonna Obuzor.

This is the moment a newspaper photographer trying to take a snap of heavy fog that had blanketed a bridge captured a couple's suicide leap.

The photographer had been standing on a viewing platform ready to take a snap of the fog shrouded bridge across the Wuhan Yangtze River in Wuhan, at Hubei province in central China.

He said: 'The mist was so thick on the bridge so large that it looked as if the bridge was standing on and disappeared into air. Like a bridge into nothingness.

Police identified the man from some of the possessions he left at the top and said he was a 20-year-old migrant worker named as Liu Han

'To be honest I didn't even see the first person jump because I was concentrating so much on the camera settings and I didn't realise at first that I had snapped the man jumping to his death

'It was only then after snapping the photograph that I heard someone shout that somebody had jumped. I heard him hit the water below and then seconds later a woman climbed onto the bridge and jumped as well.

'I was totally paralysed - there was no way I could get anywhere near her, I still had my hand on the camera and I tensed and shot off another few frames entirely by accident - but ended up photographing the woman as well.'

Police identified the man from some of the possessions he left at the top and said he was a 20-year-old migrant worker named as Liu Han, and believed that the girl who has not yet been identified was his lover.

It is not known why the pair had made a pact to throw themselves to their deaths.
