Why I travel overseas to treat gunshot wounds –Godogodo

Notorious armed robbery kingpin, Abiodun Ogunjobi (aka Abe Godogodo) has made more revelation on why it took the police so long a time to arrest him.
Godogodo told Saturday Sun that whenever he was sick, he used to take tratment in either Cotonou or Togo.

Drums were rolled out across the South West region on August 1, 2013, over the arrest of the 36- year-old man who has held sway as the kingpin of men of the underworld in the region.

For 14 years, he was said to have held sway having evaded several attempts to get him arrested before he was finally picked up by operatives of Special Anti- Robbery Squad,  Lagos State Command. He is currently being detained at the SARS cell in Lagos where he spoke to Saturday Sun during the week.

When asked how he has for so long evaded the manhunt for him by the police, he said: “You are asking how I survive police arrest, well; if you see one of my eyes; you will see clearly that it is bad. It was gunshot from the OPC (Oodua Peoples Congress) men in Ogun State but I survived it because I was very careful not to have gone to hospitals in Nigeria especially Lagos because experience has shown that doctors in Nigeria while treating bullet wound would inform the police and before you know it, you will be sleeping and when you wake up, you will see your hand handcuffed on the hospital bed.

“I think I have told you before that I don’t believe in juju so I was not patronising traditional doctors because they make claims they cannot substantiate;  you don’t know who is who among them; so I was not risking my life patronising them. What I was doing was to travel outside the country where the doctor will treat me and respect me. Once the doctor asked how I got the wound; I would tell them that armed robbers did it in Nigeria, the doctors won’t ask for Police report; they would be running up and down to save life. Even when I had ordinary malaria or typhoid fever and I sent for drugs in the pharmacy and after two days I was not okay, I would go to a hospital in Cotonou where I would be treated without the doctor asking me useless question on how I sustained the already healed wound in my body”, he disclosed.

On how he got the idea of travelling overseas to treat his gunshot wounds, he says: “You see, I had this experince after the Ifo attack on us by the OPC, one of us though not my member;he joined us from another gang, he also sustained a gunshot wound and he foolishly went to a hospital in Lagos and it was in that hospital that the police came to arrest him. Even when you lodge in a hotel in Lagos; you have to be very very careful because the hotel management may call in the Police. I don’t know how the police commissioner put fears into the minds of people that they give information any how to the police. In fact,  I see Lagosians as cowards and betrayers. That was my problem with O4 hotels in Ajah, the hotel management betrayed us by inviting the Police to raid us. The Police killed two of my trusted members. When I sit down and remember the incident, I would be asking where we had wronged the hotel where we were spending our hard earned money.”

He said he was able to deceive and escape the police at check points or on patrol because he was not using posh cars. “You know the mentality of Nigerians if they see you driving exotic cars your neighbours will start looking into your private life, so also the police. If the policeman sees you driving big cars, he will start asking too many questions and you don’t know where you will goof. That was why I was driving not too good looking cars and the strategy worked perfectly well for me”, he stated.

He further disclosed some of his survival strategies to include avoiding social gatherings. “Well I don’t drink, socialize or womanise. I don’t smoke or drink.  All these, if you avoid them, it will be difficult to expose yourself to danger. Moreso, none of my friends or relatives know my place. Not even my gang members knew that I live in Ibadan until I was arrested. My only mistake was bringing my in-laws close to me. My mother-in-law was used by the police to get me but I don’t blame her because the police brainwashed her”, he added.

The man Godogodo

Drums were rolled out across the South West region on the 1st of August, 2013, over the arrest of a 36-year-old man who has been described as an armed robbery kingpin in the region. His name is Abiodun Ogunjobi, aka Abbey Godogodo.

Godogodo, a well dreaded underworld hero, a picture which for years had been a nightmare to every security personnel, an inspiration to many aspiring miscreants and the most wanted by the past commissioners of police in the South West.

For 14 years, he was said to have held sway having evaded several attempts to get him arrested before he was finally picked up by operatives of Special Anti Robbery Squad, Lagos State command. His arrival at the police command saw officers jubilating over a job well done. Sad but proud to have him in their midst, inmates in the detention cell honoured him as each gang recognised the man who they claim inspired them to rob.

In chains and probably sober, Godogodo told his story from the very beginning with emphasis on his irrefutable taste and reasons for killing over 50 police officers.

Faulty background

Like so many children in Nigeria, his growing up days were filled with poverty and mystery. “I watched my father beat up my mother any time he came home drunk, till he finally left with another woman. My mother was a sickler and was in and out of hospital. The little money she made from her petty trade was used in the hospital till she died. I am the eldest and the responsibility falls on me to ensure that I give my siblings a better life.”

He, however, benefited from the free education and was able to finish his primary school education. “As soon as I was through with my primary school education, I decided to join my mother to hawk bread. I did that for years till a friend took me to a dump site. It was then that I discovered that I could make money picking and selling scraps rather than selling bread.

“In that job, you get to meet all kinds of touts and you need to be strong to survive out there. My greatest mistake was that I joined the bad faction but then no one should blame me because I was determined to survive. We had several clashes and because I was very tall, it was easy to gain their respect. In one of such clashes, I fought with one of the scrap collectors and in the process, I stabbed him. Although he did not die, the police accused me of murder and I was sent to prison at the age of 18, this was in 1999.”

His arrest

According to our police source, when all efforts to trace Godogodo failed, the team decided to arrest some of his close confidantes and business associates.

“All those interrogated by the police do not know where Godogodo lives” one of them told our reporter. The story that made the round, according to one of the suspects, was that Godogodo is beyond arrest and that he was battle ready for the police anytime they came after him.

Along the line, it was revealed that he paid surprise visits to his family members and met their needs without allowing them to come to him. Investigation also revealed that Godogodo had over 1000 registered Sim cards and he always removed each Sim after making a call with it. This, according to sources, is to avoid being tracked through phone calls.

To get to Godogodo, Kyari stormed the residence of his mother-in-law in Ifon, Ogun State and adopted ‘kidnap’ method in order to divert Godogodo’s mind from the fact that police were really after him.

Kyari did not only ‘kidnap’ Godogodo’s mother-in-law, he also picked everybody in that house so as to ensure that the operation remained a secret until the target was arrested.

The mother-in-law did not deny that her daughter was married to Godogodo or that she knew their residence in Ibadan; but the problem was how to get him at home.  So, SARS along with the woman left the command headquarters at about 11pm in four unmarked vehicles like traders and farmers and proceeded to Ibadan and arrived at about 3 a.m.

The mother-in-law was made to call her daughter on phone and after a long discussion about the family, she asked if her husband was at home, to which she quickly said no even though the man was at home. This was said to be the usual answer by Godogodo’s wife. The SARS team was said to have waited till 10am.

They observed that throughout the night, the generator was on, an indication that the man of the house was at home.

SARS operatives laid ambush for him till 10 am, when he emerged dressed in a simple shirt and jeans came out to inspect a building under construction in the compound. That was when they struck.

His attempt to run into the main building for his weapons was foiled, as the policemen shot him in the leg, thereby demobilizing him. He was arrested and brought to Lagos

Breaking News: Suntai sacks cabinet, appoints new SSG, Chief of Staff

Reports from Jalingo, the Taraba State capital indicate that Governor Danbaba Suntai has dissolved the state’s Executive council and sacked all advisers.
A source at the Government House also informed us that Mr. Suntai has also appointed the immediate past Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Timothy Katap, as the new Secretary to State Government, SSG.
He also appointed Aminu Jika as his new Chief of Staff. The source added that both appointees will be sworn in by 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Government House.
This is the second time that Mr. Jika is being appointed as the Chief of Staff to Mr. Suntai. He was first appointed when Mr. Suntai took office in 2007.
Controversy has trailed Mr. Suntai’s return with observers questioning his mental state of health as the governor continues to stay or be kept away from public glare.
Although the governor sent a letter to the Speaker of the Assembly on Tuesday asking to return to office, the speaker has reportedly rejected the letter asking Mr. Suntai to appear before the lawmakers to confirm his ability to lead the state.

Arik air Stowaway survival a miracle – Aviation experts

It will be recalled that the teenager apparently sneaked into the aircraft main wheel well at the Benin Airport after he had beaten security checks at the airport, but he was arrested by Arik Air personnel and handed over to Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, security upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed. Airport, Lagos when he came out of hiding.

Speaking on how Daniel could have survived at the nose wheel of the aircraft, an aviation expert and Managing Director of Belujane Consult, Mr. Chris Aligbe said there was no expert in the aviation industry that could give a satisfactory explanation to what happened, stressing that the boy's survival was indeed miraculous.

He further noted that the boy's survival could be as a result of the short distance that the plane flew, noting that from Benin to Lagos airport was just 35 minutes of flight time.

He said that the aircraft did not ascend high into the sky as it only flew at 10,000 feet above sea level.

Aligbe, however, stressed that if the distance was a long haul flight, like from Lagos to London, the teenager would have frozen to death, stressing that the higher an aircraft ascends into the sky, the cooler the nose wheel apartment becomes.

He said that was the major reason why people that stowed away from Lagos to other parts of the world are found dead upon arrival at their destination.

In such cases he said, the airline staff often found the corpses of such people on landing.

It was a miracle

He said: "There is no aviation experts that can give you a satisfactory explanation on the incident. The nostril of the aircraft is not designed for anybody to stay in. The boy's survival was miraculously done by God because the aircraft could have crushed the boy when the plane was retracting its tyres."

"Although the hole is a bit wide, it is not meant for anybody to stay in. There is no scientific explanation to it, there is no aviation expert or technology that could explain how that boy survived onboard that aircraft."

He survived because of his size — Ore

Also speaking, Chairman of Aviation Round Table, ART, Captain Dele Ore, explained that the boy survived because of his size and more so, the flight was for a short distance which was not more than 10,000 feet.
Ore said based on the small size of the boy, he was not crushed to death on the wheels where he hid himself.
The ART chairman further said had the flight been a place like United States of America, the plane would have flown above 25,000- 35000 feet, the boy would have died in five minutes because the place  he hid himself was not a pressurized area.

Group volunteers to sponsor his education

Meantime, De Raufs, a volunteer group extolling the virtues of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor of Osun State, has volunteered to sponsor 15-year-old stowaway teenager, Daniel Oikhena, who hid in the tyre compartment of Arik Air flight from Benin to Lagos.

In a statement signed by the Director General of the group, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, the group is ready to give scholarship to Daniel up to university level and help him realise his dream of travelling by air legitimately.

Shittu said: "Genius and ambitious citizen of our country must not be suffocated on the alter of political and bureaucratic enforcement. The little boy's ambition should be nurtured through qualitative education, and the group is ready to give the boy all the necessary support to make his dream a reality.

"We sincerely willing to offer him the scholarship  to encourage thousands of teenagers who are cerebral and ambitious. The leaders in Nigeria fail on their part to see the potential of the little boy. Therefore, De Raufs takes up the responsibility to safe the future of this great boy and not turning him to criminal."

Abductors Of Human Rights Lawyer Mike Ozekhome Demand N150m Ransom

(Nation) – There were conflicting reports on the whereabouts of kidnapped Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, his driver and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Athanasious Ugbomhe who were abducted in Edo State last Friday.

While reports in the social media indicated that Ozekhome’s abductors have contacted his family and demanded for a ransom of N150 million with three days ultimatum, the lawyer’s elder brother, Pius, reportedly told a confidant that no member of the family had been contacted as at Tuesday morning.

However, a close friend of Ozekhome told journalists that the kidnappers demanded for N100 million for his release. He said, “This man has health condition that requires constant attention. He is a good person and not a moneybag. They should please release him unconditionally

Microsoft Shuts Window XP

Microsoft has announced that it would shut down support for its 11-year old Windows XP operating system widely used in personal computers and laptops over security concerns.

Ahead of the planned shut down,  Microsoft  Acting Country Manager for Nigeria, Mrs Awawu  Olumide-Sojirin told journalists in Lagos that the company will stop  sending updates and assisted support to Windows XP by April, 2014.

She said the measure was taken to protect users of the application from fraudsters and hackers who have found ways to make window-XP  vulnerable.

Awawu noted that Microsoft have since launched window 8, to replace window -XP and urged users to switch to the latest window to avoid  security issues.

She said:  "Microsoft primary focus is to ensure users are protected and Windows 8 is thus capable of providing better security against malware. It contains a Defender; a full-featured anti-virus solution included in every edition of the operating system.

"That is why we are encouraging companies to upgrade to Windows 8. The reasons are obvious: security till today and in future remains a high priority investment area and with it we have enabled a broad range of new capabilities that address the top security needs and threats that they are facing today".

Also speaking about the development, Mr. Oluyomi Alarape, datacenter solutions Specialist, Microsoft Anglophone West Africa, said Microsoft is ending support for XP because "technology has dramatically changed."

He noted that the expiration of support for Windows XP is expedient due to the fact that there has been evolution in technology, maintaining that business and personal technology has dramatically changed over the last decade.

"While XP was one of the most popular operating systems in Microsoft's history, it was not designed to handle the challenges of today, such as the increased exposure to cyber-attacks and demands for more data privacy, unlike our newer operating systems such as Windows 7 and 8," he said.

He explained that, apparently, the security risk is the most concerning for customers as there are more sophisticated forms of attack which can impact safety of personal information and the hidden costs associated with support and business continuity.

"An 11-year-old operating system can no longer address today's business and technology needs nor security threats," he said.

He  hinted that the sharp increase of "hacktivism" and pirated software in 2012 formed part of reasons consumers should upgrade from XP to the latest operating systems such as Windows 7 or 8.

Pastor Impregnates Church Member, Sells The Baby For N100k

Judgment Day seems to have come for a pastor, Emmanuel Onu as he has been arrested by the Imo State Police Command for allegedly conniving with others to sell his girlfriend’s baby for N100,000.

Pastor Onu had told the mother of the baby that her baby died at Ajiwe Street, Aba in Abia State.

The Imo state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina told Sunday Sun that the pastor who hails from Umunwada Onitcha in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State and who resided at Avutu Obowo impregnated his church member who was also his girlfriend, one Nkeiru Chukwuemeka.

Nkeiru was said to be in labour pains when Pastor Onu called another lady friend (Precious Adiele) who then introduced to them a hospital called Angel of Mercy Hospital at 19 Ajiwe Street Aba, Abia State.

CP Katsina explained that on July 9, 2013, Nkeiru was delivered of a baby boy. Later Pastor Onu arranged to sell the baby for N100,000. Onu and his cohorts then told the mother of the child that the baby was dead.

CP Kastina explained that the friend, Adiele agreed with the pastor on how the baby would be sold. So, when Adiele brought in the buyer, she instructed Onu to hide so that he would not be seen. The pastor complied.

However, Adiele gave Pastor Onu just N10, 000 instead of the N100,000 for which the baby was sold.

All seemed well with the transactions until Nkeiru started asking to see her baby. The nurse attending to her explained to her how her baby had died after birth.

Meanwhile, Nkeiru’s elder brother insisted on knowing where the baby was buried. That was when the matter went to the Otoko Police Station. That led to the arrest of some nurses of the hospital and later Dr Azuka Odike.

Dr Odike told Sunday Sun that she hails from Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State and attended Ebonyi State University and currently resides in Aba, Abia State.

Odike explained that Pastor Onu came to her hospital with his wife who was nine months pregnant and that on July 9, 2013, “the wife was delivered of her baby in my hospital around 9.00am”. Pastor Onu, his girlfriend and baby left the hospital around afternoon time after they had settled their bill of N17,000.

“Pastor Onu told me that the girlfriend has mental disorder and that she had strangulated her sister and her mother. Pastor Onu warned me that I have to be careful with the baby because of his wife’s condition,” she said.

Odike explained that it was three weeks later that Pastor Onu came with policemen “to my hospital and alleged that the baby was dead and that I have buried it. They arrested my nurses and later, I went to the Otoko Police Station to report myself. I just can’t believe this.

“I am the one who discharged Pastor Onu‘s wife with the baby and they went away together. They alleged that I told them that the baby was dead and I have buried it.

“I could not have buried their baby. I am not in a position to bury their baby. Why are they coming three weeks after to arrest me with policemen?” the doctor queried.

On his part, the pastor said “ I am a pastor of Christ Chosen Church of God at Obowo LGA, Imo State and I was called by God in 2012. I am not married, but I impregnated my church member

Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo Of COZA Speaks On Ese Walter’s Allegations

“…I am sure you have read a lot about me on Twitter and social networks. You can’t imagine how many people have called me…everyone is telling me, don’t talk, that is the painful part but because I am your pastor and I don’t like to take you for granted, I still want to bend it a little bit to talk about it. Even up until this morning, calls from everywhere, even when I switch off my phone, they call my associates, tell him to ignore it, he should just move on. Some have been to our land and they are like wow, we understand”

“Now read my lips, I know there are people here that are not part of our church, read my lips, we are going to speak but we are consulting to come out with a robust reply. Before then I will not say anything, but I owe it to you as members that have made me proud and have made God proud”

“One thing you can be sure of is that my wife and I love u.”

“Now you may sit down and say, why would they tell you that, in the first place. From this pulpit there are some things we don’t say. Maybe you remember that 2 years ago, we lost somebody in our family, I came to church, I preached, I danced, I didn’t say it. That was even deeper for me because my destiny is not in anybody’s hand…that loss was deeper for me than even this and I didn’t talk so don’t think it is a makeup. That is what we have been asked to do. When we asked God, God said be quiet. Thank you”

UPDATE: Taraba Gov Suntai finally arrives Abuja

Taraba state governor, Danbaba Suntai, has finally arrived Nigeria after nearly a year abroad where he received treatment for injuries he sustained in an air crash.
Mr. Suntai arrived at the Abuja international airport minutes ago aboard a chartered jet at about 1pm.
He was received by a delegation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led former minister of information, Jerry Gana, and will fly to Taraba state capital, Jalingo, later in the day.
The apparently ailing governor was assisted by aides and medics to get off the plane before being driven to the VIP lounge of the airport in a Toyota Land Cruiser.
At the lounge, the governor sat between two men, but made no comments. Reporters were disallowed from accessing him for an interview.
There had been confusion about the schedule of his arrival as journalists, well-wishers and government officials of Taraba state government thronged the airport.
Mr. Suntai survived an air accident October last year after a small plane he piloted crashed a short distance from the Yola airport in nearby Adamawa state.
He was flown to Germany and later US where he received treatment for severe injuries which medical experts have said should have included serious brain injury.
The governor’s wife, Hauwa, said last week he had sufficiently recovered to travel home, but close associates of the governor said the decision was political as Mr. Suntai remained ill.

Immune System Boost 'Fights Cancer'

BBC
A way of firing up the body's immune system in order to attack cancer
has been discovered by US researchers.
The immune system is delicately balanced so it attacks invaders but
not the body's own tissues, reports the BBC.
Animal studies suggested that shifting the balance could open up new
treatments for cancer, the team from the Children's Hospital of
Philadelphia said.
The findings were published in Nature Medicine.
There are many diseases caused by the immune system turning on the
body's own tissues - such as type 1 diabetes or multiple sclerosis.
One popular area of research in both cancer and autoimmune diseases
has been Treg cells.
They are a part of the immune system which normally calm everything
down to prevent the immune system attacking the body.
The researchers were trying to disrupt Treg's function - effectively
taking the brakes off the immune system - so it would attack cancer.
One of the researchers, Dr Wayne Hancock, said: "We needed to find a
way to reduce Treg function in a way that permits antitumor activity
without allowing autoimmune reactions."
The researchers bred mice which lacked a chemical needed for Tregs to
work effectively. They then used a drug which produced the same effect
in normal mice.
In both experiments, the shift in the immune system restricted the
growth of a type of lung cancer.
"It really moves the field along towards a potentially major, new cancer
immunotherapy," Dr Hancock said.
However, this is still a long way from any treatment for patients with
cancer. Further tests will be needed to see if the same processes can
be manipulated in the human immune system before it could even be
tested in clinical trials.
Dr Emma Smith, from Cancer Research UK, said: "Turning the power of
our immune system against cancer is a promising field of research and
something scientists around the world, including our own, are studying.
"These findings go another step towards developing new treatments
that act in this way, but the research is still at an early stage and we
don't know yet whether this approach will be safe or effective in
people."

Taraba Agog, As Suntai Returns Today

The acting governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar,
other state officials and residents yesterday finalised
preparations for giving returning Governor Danbaba
Suntai a heroic welcome today.
The traditional institution and various religious
organisations also joined in the preparations to receive the
governor at the Jalingo Airport, 10 months after he was
flown abroad for better medical attention. He was involved
in a helicopter crash, which he flew with some of his aides,
on October 25, 2012.
After the crash in Adamawa State, the governor was first
rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was
stabilised before he was flown to Germany and later the
United States of America.
Suntai left New York yesterday for Nigeria.
The commissioner for information, Mr Emmanuel Bello,
told LEADERSHIP Sunday last night that Governor Suntai
would arrive in Jalingo Airport at 1pm. He said he would
be received by the acting governor, state functionaries and
traditional rulers from different parts of the state.
Asked whether he would be hosted to a dinner, Bello said,
“No. There won’t be any dinner party. We are all thanking
God for his recovery.” He added that the governor would
immediately head for the Government House and not to his
residence.
Bello also disclosed that Suntai spoke with Vice President
Namadi Sambo to condole with him over the death of
business mogul Alhaji Saleh Jambo. He said Governor
Suntai told the vice president that he was eager to return to
the country and to meet him.
The commissioner said that Suntai made the call to Sambo
in the presence of the Nigerian consul in New York, Alhaji
Habib.
Security has been beefed up as military and police officers
were seen last night in some strategic locations in Jalingo,
the state capital.
Vehicles were seen moving around the town with loud
speakers chanting political songs to welcome Governor
Suntai while T-shirts and wrappers with the inscription of
the governor were distributed to women and youths
preparatory to his arrival today.
Umar, in a statement signed by his press secretary, Mr
Kefas Sule, on Friday, called on the people to come out en-
masse to welcome the governor.
The statement said the governor would arrive at Nmandi
Azikiwe Airport, Abuja at 10am today before proceeding to
Jalingo.
On the governor’s entourage are his younger brother, Mr.
Babangida Suntai and some staff members of the Nigeria
Consulate General in New York with two United States
doctors that will ensure that nothing goes wrong with him
during the flight.
A sister publication, LEADERSHIP, had exclusively reported
on Tuesday that Governor Suntai was last week certified fit
by his medical team in New York to undergo a long flight
back to Nigeria.
Governor Suntai, who departed the JF Kennedy Airport in
New York City yesterday afternoon aboard a United States
chartered flight, will arrive at the Nnamdi Azikwe
International Airport in Abuja this afternoon before
leaving for Jalingo.
In a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday, his
wife, Hajiya Hauwa, who is already in Abuja waiting for
her husband, said that there was no iota of truth in the
report that she stage-managed his return in collaboration
with some loyal commissioners.
She said that Suntai will be fit to address the people on his
return to Taraba.
An online journal had on Friday reported that efforts were
in place to make the governor wave to the people at the
airport without saying a word, but Mrs Suntai said that
there was no reason to prevent him from interacting with
the people, having spent almost 10 months abroad without
being able to speak with his people.
She added that there was no plan to delay the governor’s
return till late in the night as claimed by the online outfit.
One of the US consultants who treated Governor Suntai, Dr
Andrew Smith, told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the governor
was discharged by the hospital hale and hearty. He added
that all medical examinations were duly carried out on the
governor before the decision to allow him return to Nigeria
was taken.
Although Smith confirmed that the governor had been
asking to be discharged for over three weeks, he said that it
was delayed because the medical team wanted to be sure
that he was fit to undergo the trip.
The governor had reportedly told the doctors, two weeks
ago, when he went for one of his compulsory therapies that
he was willing to return to Nigeria immediately, but the
health officials told him to wait till the end of last week for
further monitoring.
A family source told LEADERSHIP Sunday in New York on
Monday that arrangements were in top gear to ensure that
the governor’s return was open to all.
Asked why such arrangements were made, the source said
that it was to fault insinuations in Nigeria that the governor
was going to be smuggled into the country.
Our correspondent visited Suntai’s private residence in
New York from where he joined the governor, members of
his family, friends and security aides in a trip to Staten
Island where the governor’s friend, Ambassador Kennedy
Apoe, organised a 52nd birthday party in his honour.
LEADERSHIP had a brief interview with Governor Suntai
who faulted the rumours that he was mentally derailed.
He said: “I am fine (smiles). I am very fine.”
When asked if he remembered why he was brought abroad
for treatment, he replied: “Yes, a crash. They said I was
involved in a plane crash but I don’t want to talk about it
now because the memory takes me back. The doctors
advised that I should not be made to remember the
incident, but I am fine now. I am happy that I am alive to
witness today.”
Also, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had set up a fact-
finding committee which recently visited the governor in
New York in order to clear the air on the true state of his
health.
During the visit, the chairman of the committee, Senator
Hope Uzodinma, said: “We are impressed with what we
have seen and we thank God for that. We will take back
home what we have seen and we will inform the
leadership of the party. We are impressed; we are also
happy that the governor is recovering. We will still go back
home and relate what we have seen.”

Medical Director Commits Suicide

The Medical Director of City Convalescent Clinic, Medical Director
Commits Suicide this morning committed suicide at his residence, 13,
Aliu Street, Kosofe by Ile-Iwe Bus-stop, Ketu, western Nigeria.
The body of the deceased was found by his wife dangling from the
ceiling fan in one of the rooms of their two-storey building, which also
houses a clinic.
The reason why he took his life could not be ascertained as he did not
leave any suicide note behind. A neighbour of the deceased, told
P.M.NEWS that they woke up this morning and  heard people wailing
from the clinic and when they got there the wife of the deceased, who
wept uncontrollably, narrated how she discovered the lifeless body of
her late husband hanging from the ceiling this morning.
Disu said from what he gathered from the widow, they both slept
together in one of their rooms but when she noticed that the deceased
was no longer with her, she decided to check in the vacant rooms.
Disu stated further that the wife, while wailing, said she couldn’t
phantom why her middle-aged husband would decide to commit
suicide.
“The wife of the deceased is yet to come to terms with the reality that
her husband is no more. From what she said, her late husband left her
in their room. And after waiting for a while, she decided to look for her
husband only for her to find the lifeless body hanging from a ceiling fan
in an adjoining room,” Disu said
A woman, identified as Iya Kafayat, described the deceased as an easy
going man who was always ready to treat an ailing patient that comes
to his hospital.
Iya Kafayat, who was close to tears while speaking with our
correspondent, wondered what could have prompted the deceased to
take his life. “I don’t think it is an ordinary thing. Maybe he was
charmed into committing suicide but I don’t want to believe that
because only the Almighty Allah knows what actually went wrong,” she
said.
Okechukwu Obinna, one of the onlookers in front of the clinic said he is
still in shock over why a loving man would decide to commit suicide,
when things are apparently going on well for him.
An elderly woman who had known the deceased for close to two
decades said the late Medical Director could have killed himself as a
result of pressure from his erstwhile wife.
According to her, the deceased was married to his first wife for 10 years
without her bearing him a child.
“He had to marry the present wife who bore him the two kids he left
behind,” the woman told P.M.NEWS.
She added that the hospital, where the deceased committed suicide,
had been shut for close to 15 years before it was reopened.
Attempts to speak with the Divisional Police Officer the Alapere Police
Station proved abortive as our correspondent was directed to the Lagos
State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ngozi Braide.
When Braide was contacted, she said she is yet to be briefed about
what happened.
As at the time of filing this report people were still milling around the
hospital in shock over the incident. The late Okereke left behind a boy
and a girl.

Domestic transactions in equities rise by N46.7bn

The total value of domestic transactions carried out by investors on
the Nigerian Stock Exchange in June, 2013 stood at N143.59bn,
representing an increase of N46.74bn or 48.2 per cent over
N96.85bn recorded the previous month.
Domestic transactions are made up of both retail investments and
institutional investments on the NSE.
Findings by our correspondent from the NSE on Friday, which gave the
figures also showed that retail investments accounted for 33.30 per
cent of the total transactions, while institutional investments were
66.70 per cent of the amount.
A retail investor, also known as an individual investor or a small
investor, is one who buys and sells securities for his personal account
and not for another company or organisation; while an institutional
investor is a non-bank person or organisation that trades securities in
large share quantities.
In the month of May, the total value of equities exchanged by
investors stood at N101.03bn, showing a significant increase of
N12.52bn or 14 per cent compared to the N88.51bn worth of shares
exchanged in the month of April, the NSE stated.
The value of equities represents the value of a company available to
owners or shareholders.
Speaking on this, the Chief Executive Officer, NSE, Mr. Oscar Onyema,
attributed the increased activities to the rising level of investor
confidence in the market.
This, he added, was also visible from the increase in the major market
indicators of the NSE, compared to the figures recorded in the
corresponding period of previous years.
Onyema said that there had been increased participation in the market
by both local and foreign investors, adding that this had translated
into more domestic transactions on the Exchange.
He said, "It is important to note at this point that our local investors
have started to return to the market and we are very hopeful that we
will see more of this going forward this year, we at the Exchange are
bullish that the market would pick up further this year.
"I would like to state here that the Nigerian stock market has been
cleaned up to give good returns to investors and our market is too big
to be ignored by foreign investors who are looking to take advantage
of the opportunities offered by the African markets and other emerging
economies, and this is what has kept these investors."
The Managing Director, Partnership Investment Company Plc, Mr.
Victor Ogiemwonyi, said the increased participation of investors in the
Nigerian market was heart warming.
This, he noted, was an indication of the level of returns that investors
had recorded in the market within the year.
"Going forward, we expect the stock market to perform well in 2013
due to a number of far reaching initiatives by the regulators. Also,
confidence boosting measures by the NSE in trying to enforce
compliance by listed firms in filing quarterly reports will no doubt buoy
the market," he said.
A stockbroker, Mr. Ariyo Olushekun, said a lot of investors were taking
position in the equities market ahead of more expected rise in the
market transactions.
He said, "We are pleased to note that recovery has already
commenced in our market and we are sure that this recovery would be
sustained. Already, you would notice that we have significant year-to-
date returns in the market.
"All indications point to the fact that we are going to see even more
growth in the months ahead, and we can see this from the way that
both local and foreign investors have been playing in the market in the
last two years, taking advantage of the undervalued prices of major
companies."
In 2012, the total value of equities traded on the NSE was N658.22bn
or $4.23bn.
This amount showed an increase of N23.3bn or 3.67 per cent over
N634.92bn or $4.18bn recorded at the end of 2011.

Stranded Boko Haram militants turn human eaters

Dozens of suspected Boko Haram militants in Magumeri forest, Borno,
have turned to human eaters after being stranded for days without
food or water, News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Magumeri forest is about 150km from Maiduguri, the state capital.
A suspected militant, Mallam Momodu Bukar, told journalists on
Saturday in Maiduguri that he fled the camp at the forest on Thursday
when it became obvious that he was going to be eaten.
"I thank God that I escaped because I would have been slaughtered
by now to provide meal for my colleagues at the camp," Bukar said.
The suspected militant was captured by a youth vigilante group,
popularly known as the civilian JTF at Baga Road motor park,
Maiduguri, on Friday.
He said the militants had been in the forest since May, when they were
dislodged from Marte, Marte Local Government Area, by the Joint
Task Force on Operation Restore Order after the declaration of the
state of emergency.
"Our group, consisting of about 300 well-armed combatants, headed
for Magumeri on the orders of the sect leader, Abubakar Shekau,
shortly before the military took over  Marte Camp.
"We have been wandering in the forest. We have exhausted our food
and water supply, and so, everybody became hungry,'' Bukar said.
He also said they lost contact with Shekau due to the closure of GSM
services by the Defence Headquarters.
He said, "It all started last Monday when three of the combatants in
camp died of acute hunger, and it became obvious that all of us will
die if action was not taken. The leader of the group, Abu Omar,
directed that a non-combatant member be slaughtered to provide
meal for the rest.
"The meat provided meal for the combatant for just two days and
another person was killed in the same manner on Wednesday. So, it
became certain that I might be the next person since I am also a non-
combatant member.''
Bukar said he escaped after volunteering to help search for drinking
water for the group in a nearby village.
"I left the camp on Thursday evening after agreeing to fetch water
from the village. After leaving the camp, I started running until I arrived
at Magumeri town, so, I slept in the motor park before boarding a
vehicle to Maiduguri with the little money on me.'' he said.
Bukar said he was apprehended immediately he arrived at the motor
park in Maiduguri by the youth vigilante group.
Commenting, an official of the vigilante group, Mallam Ajid Asheik,
said the suspect would be handed to the Joint Task Force on
Operation Restore Order for investigation.

Teenager flies Arik Air from Benin to Lagos hiding in tyre hole

A teenager named Daniel Ikehina unbelievably beat airline and airport
security at the Benin airport today Saturday August 24th and sneaked
into the tyre compartment of a Lagos-bound Arik flight. The boy flew
safely with the aircraft which left Benin around 9am today and landed
at Murtala Muhammed airport, hidden throughout in the undercarriage.
He was immediately arrested by airport security after passengers saw
him emerging from the aircraft tyre hole.
Arik spokesman Banji Ola explains what happened:
The management of Arik Air has expressed shock over the
incident wondering how the teenager beat the Aviation Security
personnel at the Benin Airport to get to the runway.
The pilot of Arik Air flight W3 544, departing Benin Airport for
Lagos at 9.00am today 24th August, 2013 reported to the control
tower the presence of a strange boy in the bush about 200 – 300
meters at the end of runway 23.
The control tower told the Captain that they were sending security
men to the place to arrest the boy.
As the captain was making his final turn, preparatory for take-off,
a cabin crew called his attention to the information by some of the
passengers that they saw a boy running towards the airplane.
The First Officer confirmed that they had observed it earlier and
alerted the control tower which responded that they have sent the
patrol team to arrest the boy.  The Captain again reported to the
control tower and was informed that the situation was under
control and that he had been cleared for take-off.
On arrival at the domestic wing of MMA, Lagos, a teenage boy,
who apparently had sneaked into the aircraft main wheel well
jumped out and was arrested by Arik personnel and handed over
to FAAN security.
Meanwhile the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) blamed Arik
Air for the incident.
FAAN said in a statement:
"Arik Air acted with impunity by not stopping the aircraft to check
when the crew and ground personnel’s attention was drawn to an
abnormality on the tarmac. This is arrant display of impunity. The
aircraft should not have taxied further, but return to the apron
until a proper check is carried out on all parts of the aircraft.
FAAN will not tolerate such impunity henceforth from Arik or any
airline. Any violation would be met with applicable sanctions.

Enugu Gets First International Flight Today

History will be made today as the first international commercial
passenger flight will berth at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport,
Enugu.
President Goodluck Jonathan had recently formally opened the
remodeled airport and assured the people of the south-east zone that
international flights would commence from Enugu.
Today’s historic flight will be made to Enugu by Ethiopian Airlines
which will now be the first international carrier to operate from the
Enugu Airport. It will also airlift its first passengers from the Coal City to
Addis Ababa today.
Though, a prominent businessman from Anambra State, Prince Arthur
Eze had last week Tuesday equally made a historic landing at the
airport all the way from Senegal with his private jet, residents of Enugu
and other adjourning states are in high spirit to welcome the passenger
flight.
Already, the Enugu State Government has assured that adequate
preparations have been made to ensure that the event described as a
significant milestone in the economic life of the state and the entire
south east, was successfully conducted.
Governor Sullivan Chime and his colleagues from the other states in the
region as well as many important dignitaries from within and outside
the country will be on hand to receive the epoch flight. As expected, an
atmosphere of excitement and jubilation now pervades Enugu and
other states in the south east region as residents eagerly await the
arrival of the maiden international flight.
The Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah who worked tirelessly to ensure
that the clamour of the people of the zone was realised noted that
businessmen and other travellers from Enugu, Aba, Abakaliki, Onitsha,
Owerri, Umuahia and as far as Asaba and Benin will be saved the
stress of travelling to Lagos or Abuja to catch international flight.
On the viability of the Enugu Airport, the Managing Director of the
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, George Uriesi said, “I know a lot of
passengers from Nigeria are from the South East region. They will now
have the opportunity to travel directly from Enugu to wherever and
back to Enugu without having to go somewhere else. Some airlines
have indicated interest. Based on their numbers they know there is
business here.”
ThisDay checks however showed that though the airport had been
formally opened, there are still some major facilities that are lacking at
the airport.
The airport at the moment, according to sources has no night landing
facility which would ultimately affect airlines that may want to operate
night flights.

Nigeria to supply China with 3.2m tonnes of dry cassava chips- Minister

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwumi Adesina,
said on Friday that Nigeria had secured a contract to supply China with
3.2 million tonnes of dry cassava chips.
Mr. Adesina stated this in a paper entitled: “The Value Chain
Roadmap’’, which he delivered at the ongoing 9th All Nigeria Editors
Conference holding in Asaba, Delta State.
He said arrangement was ongoing with the African Import/Export Bank
to finance the processors of the product with a loan facility of $40
million (N632m) to meet the terms of the contract.
Mr. Adesina said that Nigerian farmers and processors would make as
much as $800 million (N128 billion) from the contract.
“We are focusing on Cassava chips for export, production of chips for
livestock industry, starch, sweeteners, and ethanol.
“A revolution is on its way in Agbadu in Kogi State, where today, Cargill,
the world’s leading manufacturer of food, is working with my ministry
and the Kogi State Government to set up a 75,000-tonne starch-to-
sweetener plant, that will reduce our dependency on sugar imports.
“Over 15,000 hectares have been secured. They are being cleared for
farmers to produce cassava for this plant.
“Nigeria has secured a contract to supply China. At the start of my
tenure, I said we have to take on the export market for dry cassava
chips.
“We set a target of doing 900,000 tonnes by 2015. I am very delighted
to let you know that we have already secured 3.2 million tonnes of dry
cassava chips contract from China,” he said.
The minister added that President Goodluck Jonathan had approved a
N10 billion Cassava Bread Fund for the training of 5,000 master bakers
across the country.
He explained that the money would be used to enhance cassava
production, support cassava processors to process cassava flour at a
lower cost and to enable other bakers to grow the social marketing of
cassava bread.
Mr. Adesina commended the Delta Government for allocating 6,000
hectares for the cultivation of cassava at a proposed processing plant
at Abraka.
He said that the plant had the capacity to process 72,000 tonnes of
cassava and gave the assurance that the ministry would assist the
state government to become one of the largest producers of cassava
flour in the country.

Removal of Destitute From The Streets: Lesson From San Francisco, By Theophilus Olusegun Obayemi

“While our prospective litigation asserts the rights of California
taxpayers, it’s equally necessary to protect society’s most vulnerable
from continued institutional abuse. Homeless psychiatric patients are
particularly defenseless from the kind of lawless ‘patient dumping’
practices Nevada officials engaged in. It’s my hope that our
investigation and possible class action will send a strong message to
public health facilities nationwide that there is a price to pay for such
inhumane treatment in the future—especially when California
jurisdictions are being victimized, too…reporting helped expose
Nevada’s improper patient discharge and busing practices, which may
otherwise have gone unnoticed.”
See City Attorney Dennis Herrera’s August 20, 2013 Letter to Nevada
State Attorney General Catherine Cortez Mastro
The Nigerian media has become inundated with academic comments
on the nuances of the forceful and involuntary removal of persons of
eastern origin from Lagos State to their home states. Because most of
the “deportees” have various health issues, this practice is inhumane,
legally, economically and morally wrong. Our position with this paper is
that the Attorneys-General of Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo States
should (a) file a Class Action on behalf of the deportees before the
Federal High Court in Abuja seeking injunction and damages; (b) seek
reimbursement for health care costs and expenses associated with
taking care of the deportees; (c) Institution of Strict Mental and Medical
Health Protocols in hospitals under Lagos State government.
In the end, we shall outline the contents of the proposed Mental and
Medical Health Protocols required of Lagos State government.
Similar to Lagos’ deportation of medically challenged persons of
eastern ancestry, starting from April 2008, Nevada started to send
persons with mental illnesses to California with one-way tickets. The
facts were that the Nevada’s Rawson‐Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las
Vegas bused more than 1,500 psychiatric patients to locations
throughout the nation. Some of these patients arrived in San Francisco,
Sacramento, Oakland, and other cities in California. Thereafter, the San
Francisco City Attorney’s office launched an investigation to determine
whether any of the
31 Greyhound bus tickets that Rawson‐Neal purchased for trips to San
Francisco conveyed improperly discharged patients. According to
Herrera, the preliminary conclusion of the investigation is that among
24 patients bused to San Francisco (including some who made
multiple trips), 20 sought and were provided emergency medical care
shortly after their arrival. Though the City Attorney’s investigation
remains ongoing, San Francisco expended nearly half a million dollars
for medical care for the patients who were not city residents at the time
that they were improperly bused here from Rawson‐Neal.
Earlier on, in March 2013, the Sacramento Bee first reported the story of
48‐year‐old James Flavy Coy Brown, a former Rawson‐Neal patient
who was sent on a 15‐hour bus ride to Sacramento—despite having
never before visited, having no friends or family members in the area,
and with no prior arrangements for his care, housing or medical
treatment. The Nevada‐run hospital had discharged Brown in a taxicab
to the Greyhound bus station with a one‐way ticket to Sacramento,
snacks, and a three‐day supply of medication to treat his
schizophrenia, depression and anxiety. Brown was instructed to call
911 when he arrived. A Rawson‐Neal physician reportedly
recommended “sunny California” to Brown as a destination, according
to the Sacramento Bee, because they “have excellent health care and
more benefits than you could ever get in Nevada.”
The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on behalf of
Brown and others entitled: Brown v. Rawson-Neal 2:13-cv-01039
before the United States District Court, District of Nevada. According to
Brown:

INEVSTIGATION (1): Nigeria hit by doctors shortage, as patients wait years for attention in Lagos university hospital

Nigeria appears headed for a grave health crisis as the nation’s
hospitals face a severe shortage of qualified medical staff in key areas
of specialisation, forcing thousands of patients abroad yearly. Those
who are unable to afford travelling abroad are left to die or placed on
queues that in some hospital last years.
With the country taking the negative lead in several global health
indicators, health personnel who should help reverse the tide are in
short supply across the country with training and recruitment
increasingly ebbing.
Currently, the country has only 600 paediatricians to care for its over 40
million children, compared to the United Kingdom’s over 5,000 for 20
million children. The figures are more depressing in other areas of
medical specialisation. With the rising cases of cancer across the
country, there are only a little above 15 oncologists; 10 neurosurgeons
to attend to issues related to the nervous system; and 120 urologists to
manage conditions related to the male urinary tract and reproductive
organs such as prostate, kidney, bladder cancers, prostate cancer,
testicular cancers, infertility in men, sexual dysfunction etc.
There are currently no podiatrists in the country- a doctor that treats
conditions of the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg; a key
specialisation considering the nation’s teeming diabetics.
While all hospitals in the country are affected, the pressure caused by
the shortage is by far clearer in some hospitals than others. At the
Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja, for instance,
the shortage of doctors has led to many resident doctors remaining on
call for a month, overworked. Patients in need of special care are forced
to remain on queues for weeks, months and, in some cases, years.
Endless wait
Nine-year-old Abdul Ibrahim was five when his parents took him to the
paediatric unit of LASUTH in 2009. He needed surgery to treat hernia.
Such services are promptly delivered in private clinics, and even with
usual delays in government hospitals, a patient should get attended to
in three months, some experts and patients have said. But Abdul’s first
appointment for an operation was one year after-2010. However, when
they called at the hospital 12 months later, the operation was
rescheduled repeatedly until 2013 while he continued with routine
checkups. The reasons for the delay, according to the hospital, were
the already waiting line of people scheduled for the same procedure
and the few doctors available to provide it.
“We came to LASUTH in 2009 and after thorough examination, he was
diagnosed with hernia. One of his testes was swollen and it was
causing him a lot of discomfort and he could not play or move with it,”
Abdul’s mother, Silifat Ibrahim, narrated to PREMIUM TIMES recently,
sobbing.
“We felt the surgery would be done as soon as possible but to our
surprise, we were asked to come back in March 2010 for the operation.
When I complained, I was told that there were hundreds of patients
waiting for the same surgery at the unit.”
When Abdul showed up with his mother on their assigned date in 2010,
they were turned back again and given another date for 2011. The
hospital said there was spillover of patients from 2010. A year later, in
2011, the story turned worse: Abdul’s file was missing.
“They had reassured me that my son’s operation would be done that
day and we got there as early as 6 a.m. but the nurse told us again
that the surgery would not take place because his file was missing. The
nurse just said I should better go and start the tests all over again,
because without it there would be no surgery,” his mother recalled.
While the delay continued, the young Abdul remained in excruciating
pains with abdominal ache that gave him sleepless nights. His parents
were subsequently told to return in November 2012.
But the family received the shock of their lives. When they took Abdul
who was still in pains to the hospital in November, they were told to
come back in 2013, four years after he was initially billed for the
surgery.
“When Ibrahim first visited the hospital, he was five years old and now
he is nine. We see other patients lamenting that they have been
coming even before 2009. My fear is that they may also postpone the
surgery from 2013 to 2014,” the little boy’s mother lamented amidst
sobs.

Nigerian government presents ‘video evidence’ of Boko Haram accepting dialogue

The Federal Government, Friday, reiterated its position that members of
the outlawed Boko Haram have accepted to dialogue with the
government.
The Minister of Special Duties and Chairman of the Presidential
Committee on Dialogue and Resolution of Security Challenges in the
North, Tanimu Turaki, stated this while briefing journalists at the
Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday.
Mr. Turaki quoted the group as saying that “it becomes incumbent
upon every Muslim to accept that dialogue option”.
The minister, who was flanked by members of the committee, played a
video clip of a meeting of the supposed leadership of the sect who
spoke in Arabic language after which Mr. Turaki translated. The video,
in Arabic, was played to reporters and translated by Mr. Turaki’s
committee. PREMIUM TIMES is not in possession of the video and is
unable to confirm its content.
The translation read by Mr. Turaki, however, shows that the Boko
Haram ‘leaders’ in the video are already in prison.
“More surprised the committee met us in prison custody and explained
to us reason for their visit and also asked four fundamental questions,”
one of the leaders was translated by Mr. Turaki as saying in the video.
“Thirdly, which assistance those of us in detention would give in
realisation of that,” the speaker said confirming that those of them in
the video were already in government’s detention facilities.
It is not clear how much influence members of the sect in detention
have on those perpetrating criminal acts outside, although Mr. Turaki’s
committee apparently believes they do.
Mr. Turaki said the Boko Haram ‘leaders’ accepted to dialogue after
“strenuous efforts of the committee,” and in line with the teaching of
Prophet Mohammed.
“What you have just watched is a video clip of some of the members of
the Jamatul Alhus Sunnah Jehad, we have sat down in Shura and
Shura is the highest decision making council,” Mr. Turaki said after
playing the video clip.
“They sat down in Shura and the have analyzed from purely Islamic
perspective taking into account the clear and unambiguous position of
the Holy Koran and taken into account the teachings and
fundamentally, the practices of the Holy Prophet Mohammed on the
issue of dialogue and peaceful reconciliation. Strengthening their
position again with the work of other great Islamic scholars globally
who have had cause to also make research and come up with a lot of
literature supporting the course of dialogue,” he said.
He said the Boko Haram members believed that they were living by the
teachings of the prophet as enshrined in the provisions of the Quran.
“Now, the Qur’an specifically says that sulh (dialogue, negotiation or
settlement), has a lot values, and in fact Muslims are encouraged to
enter into dialogue. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him),
who practicalised the provisions of the Qur’an and the teachings of
Islam, has also entered into agreement or treaty of Hudaibiyyah, where
even the terms that were proposed and agreed upon at that time were
clearly against the interest of Muslims, but the prophet (peace be upon
him) accepted and at the end of the day it paved way for everlasting
peace even till today within the Arabian Peninsula.”
” So there is peace not only in the Middle East including even the Far
East. What we are saying is that we are convinced that all the efforts
we are making we will now be able to arrive at the middle course. Of
course, dialogue does not mean that there would be absence of
differences,” he said.
He added that the group also claimed that as far as dialogue is
concerned, “Muslims who operate strictly in accordance with the
teachings of Prophet Mohammed have no option but to accept. They
have also called on others that are in the field to accept the option in
the spirit of peaceful co- existence and give peace a chance”.
Mr. Turaki said his committee was also “discussing with other very
respected and key leaders who are in the field and discussions are
getting to advanced stage.”
“As soon as we get to the point where we have gotten with these
people, we shall inform you and the world that the dialogue option as
envisaged by the President is not only working but that it has glaringly
establish the wisdom of Mr. President towards resolving the security
challenges ones and for all.

Sunday Eboh is one of them. He told LEADERSHIP
WEEKEND that many graduates from universities and
polytechnics who had roamed Abuja’s streets in search of
unavailable white collar jobs ave now turned to the car
wash business.
“Many of the youths you see on Abuja streets washing cars
are graduates of one university or polytechnic in this
country. They are tired of roaming the streets in search of
jobs that do not exist and they have taken their fate into
their own hands by resorting to washing cars so that they
can survive,” Eboh said.
Although they operate illegally since the FCT would
obviously not approve of washing cars on asphalted roads,
LEADERSHIP WEEKEND also gathered that each car wash
operator earn between N4,000 and N5, 000 per day,
depending on patronage.
Another car washer, Okey Manu, said: “It was when I
started washing cars that I realised the monetary benefits
therein. This car wash business is a gold mine. If I tell you
how much we make each day, you will be surprised. Many
of us make more money daily than many civil servants?”
These moonlighting car wash operators in Abuja choose
their operation base well, invariably staying close to areas
where they can have access to water either from a flowing
river or from water pipes.
However, there are allegations that the illegal car wash
locations have contributed to cases of broken water pipes
in Abuja, leaving many homes in the FCT without water
supply from the territory’s water mains and forcing them
to drill boreholes.
Although it is obvious they are te patrons of these illegal car
wash operators, some residents of Abuja who spoke with
LEADERSHIP Weekend complained that their activities
constitute environmental and social hazards. Specifically,
they stated that the roads on which these car wasers operate
are usually filthy and water-logged, even in the dry season.
Of uppermost concern to residents, however, is the threat
these illegal car wash operations pose to the roads.
One resident who pleaded anonymity told LEADERSHIP
Weekend: “How can the FCT allow such a thing on the
highway? These car wash operators are damaging the roads
with the water they use to wash cars. Besides that, what of
the dangers these boys are exposed to as they wash cars on
the road, with all the mad drivers racing on  Abuja road?
“No serious government would allow this to continue and I
expect the FCT authorities to stop it forthwith. Yes the car
wash boys are Nigerians and have the right to make a
living but they must not do it illegally as it is now or do it to
damage public infrastructure. These roads will soon
become damaged by water and then we’ll begin to shout
that government should fix them. A stich in time saves
nine. The FCT should tell these boys to go and do their car
wash business off the roads. That is my own position on
this issue.”
Recently, assistant director, community sanitation and
clinic, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB),
Emmanuel Akachie, disclosed that the board would soon
designate special areas for car wash business in the FCT,
especially in the capital city, Abuja.
Akachie, who spoke during a special community
environmental cleaning exercise in Gwagwalada, FCT
expressed the board’s concern about the social and
environmental nuisance caused by indiscriminate car wash
activities in Abuja.
The AEPB official stated that he had set up a committee to
draw a blueprint for the special car wash areas to solve the
problem.
He expressed optimism that the proposed policy would
create additional business oppotunities for FCT residents.
Also, public relations officer, AEPB, Joe Ukairo, told
Our men that in a matter of weeks, the
AEPB would come up with approved places and areas for
car wash in the FCT.
Ukairo noted: “Though we recognise the importance of car
wash as an essential service in the federal capital territory,
we cannot accommodate irregularities and indiscriminate
washing of cars on Abuja streets.”

How Bishop, Pastor, Defrauded 68- Year-Old Woman

Queen Emegha Ozuke, business woman and founder of a
reputable nursery, primary and secondary school in Kubwa
town of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory
(FCT), speaks to CHRIS OGBOR on her ordeal in the hands of
some fake men of God
It is an irony that Queen Emegha Ozuke, who is supposed
to be enjoying the dividend of being one of the pioneer
visitors to Abuja after its creation by Decree No. 6 of 1976
and should be reaping the fruits of her labour, is rather in
a dilemma as a result of the nefarious activities of some
dubious ministers of the gospel.
Emegha Ozuke, who hails from Igbanke in Edo State and
has been living in Abuja since 1979, said she was one of the
contractors that supplied Dumez (Nig.) Limited elephant
grass which the company used for erosion control while
constructing roads in various parts of the Federal Capital
City (FCC) in the 1980s. As a pioneer settler and business
woman, she was allocated plots of land in Deidei, Jikwoyi,
Kubwa, Kurudu, et al in the FCT and established a primary-
cum-secondary school in Kubwa town.
According to the 68-year-old woman:  “My problem started
when my beloved daughter, Patience got married to Mr
Etumudon Godwin and later had a baby. Because she was
nursing a child, Patience’s husband introduced a lawyer
known as Abdullahi Ibrahim to me to serve as legal adviser
of my school.”
Ozuke disclosed that in September 2008, Abdullahi
borrowed the sum of N1million from her late daughter
(Patience) on the pretext that he was going to use it to
execute contract at the police headquarters in Abuja. She
added that Abdullahi promised that he would pay back the
money with interest on the 17th day of October 2008, but
has not done so up till now.
She also said Abdullahi in turn introduced to her, one
Pastor Alani Alex, general overseer of Creative Faith
International Gospel Centre who was said to be looking for
a place to use as branch of his church. She said that Alex
eventually rented a large hall in her school compound and
paid rent for the first year, 2009. He also did some repair
work on a 3-bedroom flat annexed to the school for use by
his church.
LEADERSHIP Weekend, however, gathered that Ozuke
reached an agreement with the pastor to stay in the school
compound for three years (2009-2012) only, and to go with
her to the market to purchase all building materials
necessary for the renovation work for record purposes, but
that the pastor bought the materials without her
knowledge.
At the end of the three years agreed, Ozuke said, “Pastor
Alex refused to vacate my premises except I refunded to
him the sum of N4.1 million which he alleged he spent on
the renovation of the property.”
An eviction notice to Pastor Alex, dated July 26, 2013 and
from Ozuke’s lawyer, Barrister S. O. Peters reads: “Very
sadly, contrary to the terms of the understanding and
agreement you have with our client, you have willy nilly
decided to overstay the three (3) years fixed duration and
even went further to forcefully annex some other parts of
the school and against our client’s consent decided to make
use of the building as part of your worship centre. To make
and use someone else’s property without the consent and
permission of the owner of the property under the guise of
religion is to portray the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in
bad light …”
Reacting to the allegations referred to in the letter when
LEADERSHIP Weekend met him on Sunday, August 18,
2013, Pastor Alex insisted that he paid a sum of N450,000
to Madam Ozuke in 2009 for the use of the hall and spent
an additional N4.1 million for renovation work on the
property.
The pastor, who said he built the school hall because there
was no structure on ground when he started worshipping at
the premises, said he would vacate the place whenever
Ozuke refunds the N4.1 million to him. He also said he was
willing to have an architect or quantity surveyor assess the
extent of work done and expenses incurred during the
renovation.
The bursar of the school, Mr Emmannuel Odiniya,
however, said there was existing structure in the school
compound, adding that the clergyman actually roofed the
hall and did renovation work on the uncompleted building.
He also disclosed that the pastor is currently making use of
a classroom in the school as his children church, adding
that he (the pastor) promised to deduct the rent in respect
of the classroom from the money Ozuke would pay to
him.
Another ‘man of God’ who allegedly defrauded Ozuke of
several millions of naira is Bishop Promise Dibie, a former
lecturer at College of Education, Agbor in Delta State but
now with College of Education, Zuba in the Federal Capital
Territory.
In 2008, according to Ozuke, “Bishop Dibie and his mother
(Theresa) approached me that they needed a place in Abuja
to establish their church and I showed them my plot of land
No. D41 at Zaudan, Pazeri and Sabon Gari Layout near
Deidei, for temporary use.
“I thought Bishop Dibie and his mother were true preachers
of the gospel because they prayed fervently and spoke in
tongues each time they visited me. So I drew closer to them
and regarded them as family friends, not knowing that they
are sheep in wolves’ clothing”, Ozuke said with tears
streaming down her eyes.
She also disclosed that while her daughter (late Patience)
and her husband (Godwin) were seriously ill, she asked
Dibie to sell her 18-seater bus and a plot of land on Arab
road, Kubwa, to defray their medical bills.
“Bishop sold the bus for N500,000 and the plot of land for
N2.5 million to one Pastor Sam of Christ’s Victorious
Church, Kubwa, bringing the total amount to N3million but
unfortunately, my daughter died two weeks after the death
of her husband and few days after the sale of the property.
When I asked Bishop to give me the N3 million, he
promised to do so after the burial ceremony of my
daughter.
She also claimed, “Pastor Sam also robbed me of N200,000
on the pretext that he would supply machine for printing of
exercise books to my school. Sadly, up till date, neither has
Pastor Sam nor Bishop Dibie refunded the money to me”,
Ozuke lamented.
Madam Ozuke also told  our men that Bishop
Dibie stole photocopy of her document in respect of her plot
of land in Jikwoyi, sold it to one Dr Ademola Adeyinka
through a female lawyer for N4million and instead, paid
N1.6 million into her account.
“I, however, paid back the N1.6 million to Bishop Dibie and
sold the land by myself, to a civil servant”, Ozuke
disclosed.
In his reaction, Dr Ademola Adeyinka in a telephone chat
with LEADERSHIP Weekend, said he reported the matter to
the police at Jikwoyi police station on Thursday, June 26,
2013, adding that Bishop Dibie is yet to refund the N4
million he defrauded him of through the female lawyer
who allegedly posed as the rightful owner of the land.
Asked why he has not collected his money from the Bishop
or the female lawyer since the past four years, Adeyinka
said, “I am a very busy man, I am taking my time, but be
rest assured that by God’s grace, I must get back my N4
million”.
Concerted efforts by LEADERSHIP Weekend to get the
response of Bishop Dibie have not been successful because
some of his colleagues at the College of Education, Zuba
said he travelled abroad a few months ago, to pursue his
masters degree programme at Coventry University in the
United Kingdom.
LEADERSHIP Weekend also gathered from an
unimpeecable source in Agbor, Delta State that Bishop Dibie
fraudulently collected the sum of N1.3 million from Messrs
Udoka and Nduka on the pretext of issuing them visas to
travel to Europe. Our source further revealed that the
victims dragged the Bishop to the police in Agbor where he
gave each of them N300,000 with a promise to refund the
balance, but has not done so up till now.
In their reactions to the nefarious activities of ‘new
generation’ men of God in Nigeria, two elders of a
Pentecostal church (names withheld), who are aware of
Madam Ozuke’s predicaments, wondered why Pastor Alex
would still be preaching and asking people to repent of
their sins when he was yet to vacate the premises of the 68-
year-old woman after the expiration of his tenancy, and
why Bishop Dibie, an overseer of St Peter’s Christ Army
Church  of Nigeria in Agbor, Delta State, has refused to pay
her the N3 million he realised from the sale of her property
since 2009.
